quote:

Kevin Steen: In April, I wrestled Vordell Walker and that was the ’T-Shirt Incident’ night, so that night was terrifying. A week before the show I asked you, “can I just wrestle in my t-shirt, I don’t feel comfortable without it.” People weren’t exactly blown away with my Ring of Honor run so far. […] This is where I suspect you had to [have told] CM Punk that I asked you about wrestling in a t-shirt.
That afternoon, as soon as I got there, Punk made a comment to me about wrestling in a t-shirt. I was like, well I guess that got back to him somehow. And then, I had a terrible match with Vordell Walker. Just loving abysmal. I came to the back and I don’t know, I made this snide comment to Punk about my t-shirt and he lost it on me. You didn’t see any of this?

Gabe Sapolsky: I didn’t see any of this.

Kevin Steen: Anyway, I came to the back and I was blown [up]. Punk was just there watching me. And I don’t know why but [I was like] “Are you happy now?”, but I was just joking around with him. He did not take it as a joke. He just stood up and I remember this, I remember he stood up and he looked around and I knew what he was going to do. We had this weird moment…I was like ‘please don’t do it’ and he’s like 'no no, I have to’. So it was like weird, like he was warning me. It was like he was telling me this is a show.
He goes, “nope I have to…WHO THE gently caress…” and he just starts screaming at me in the locker room and everybody turns to look at me. And I was like what do I do now?

Gabe Sapolsky: You should have punched him in the face dude.

Kevin Steen: Dude, I thought about shoving him as hard as I could. […] But at that point I wanted to be [in Ring of Honor] so bad and he’s really making me look like an rear end in a top hat. I could see weight equipment all around us. I could see a bench press right behind…if I had shoved him, he would have taken a bump. That’s the thing, I was like 'do I just loving shove this guy?’ and I was like, I can’t do that. Also I was friends with Colt [Cabana], kind of, at that point. Then I saw Homicide with his t-shirt [on] right there and I felt like going, 'yell at him too’. Both choices would have been horrible.
So I just went, “Ok. You’re right, I’m sorry”, and that was it. I completely bitched out. Completely.

Cm punk is probably a prick and a little overrated but there's no loving place in the multiverse where Kevin Owens of all people is a better heel than cm punk.

Edit: I like a lot of Owens matches and promos but nothing brought me greater joy than listening to his ROH theme song for the first time. I was laughing for days.

hmm I was skeptical so I looked back briefly and nope it looks like it's mostly people joking about him getting killed on tv, or being paired up with a sack for a real bad fight that he might lose to anyway.

I'll be the first to admit I don't know a whole ton about any given wrestleman so maybe CM Punk really is a sly business dealer like that, but I get the impression that this wasn't his angle at all and he really is a doof who thought high-level MMA would be a cool thing for him to do and he simply got the fringe benefit of covered medical care.

The basic background, and really the reason Punk left wrestling, is that wrestling provides no medical care other than what Vince McMahon decides to pay for out of the goodness of his heart. There is nothing contractual. Most of the reason wrestlers do commercials and whatever is so they get a SAG credit and therefore insurance.

UFC took in a wrestler in his late 30's and really no demonstrated MMA ability on the idea that it would pop at least one buyrate. Surely Punk intends to fight, but he got into UFC on the strength of a Japanese-style striker gimmick and a high profile, so by definition UFC got worked.

Also you either have to be a total carny and/or extremely lucky to get to the top of the WWE, it's only nominally a merit-based system and Punk's look is the opposite of what Vince pushes given a choice.

That may all be true, but if it truly was always just about the insurance all along, why not do what everyone else does as you say and get a SAG credit, sparing his fragile ego the embarrassment or inconvenience of redundant interview questions, losing Kumite-style Rufousport smokers and being called a coward on the internet for ducking Mickey Gall? Surely the man with the Pepsi logo tattooed on his flesh is not above selling out for a few TV spots.

If it was only about that he would have done it already, why wait 2 years and train every day and get injured etc if you just want a payday to fight a can and dont care

He sincerely wanted to do MMA and be good at it and is now scared to do it because he found out its really hard. Its easy to say theres no downside but he has an ego and a reputation and doesnt want to just look like total poo poo and get humiliated on TV after all this

It's wierd that people keep trying to trick themselves into thinking this was some expert business play on the Cool Master Punk's part to wring some of those juicy dollars from the notoriously caring and generous UFC rather than just a guy making a dumb decision to get roughhoused by Mickey "The Assasssin" Gall on the bottom of the fight pass prelims.

as someone who just had this revelation a few days ago I concur.

Although CM Punk was courted by several of the top gyms in the country to come train and he knew he was going to be given special, individualized treatment at any of those gyms 5 days a week. You can't really blame CM Punk for hyping himself up when AKA and American Top Team and so on were reaching out trying to get him to join their teams.

Rener and Ryron treat their white belts with big pillowy kid gloves and don't let them actually roll to find out that bjj is actually a lot of work and takes a long time to not suck at, so probably not.
