it's time to talk about the new DOOM because it's so goddamn good You may remember the old game Doom from back in the 90's, the classic case of a game that revolutionized games and also pissed off parents for the violence and demonic imagery it portrayed. They announced a reimagining last year set to release this year, and two weeks ago, it came out on PC, XBOX One, and PS4. People's expectations were rock-loving-bottom after the multiplayer demo was a mess and the original trailer painted it to miss the point of the original games, fast-paced intense gameplay, since it had lengthy execution kills and the run speed was quite slow. Well they listened to the complaints, tripled the execution speed and modified them to be a smart gameplay mechanic, and doubled the run speed to be more in line with the 90 miles an hour the original Doomguy ran at. All your favorite hell demons are back, from Cacodemons and Revenants, to Pinky Demons, Imps, and the Cyberdemon. And while the game has a surprisingly good story for a game that doesn't need one, Doomguy doesn't give a single gently caress about any of it. DOOM is fantastic. It's intense, it's frantic, it's shockingly simple in design but still incredibly engaging on both a visceral and strategic level. The singleplayer campaign is 100% worth the full price of admission and lasts a lot longer than expected, and jams a boatload of secrets, weapons, and easter eggs into every level. It doesn't hurt that it looks appropriately grotesque. The soundtrack and sound design fits it perfectly, with music done by the guy who did Killer Instinct and Wolfenstein: The New Order. Buy DOOM. It's worth it. If you've got a good PC, get it on Steam, because holy gently caress does it look good on max settings. It never drops frames despite having dozens of demons and explosions going on constantly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO90omga8D4&hd=1 Giant Bomb's Quick Look has the guys more enthusiastic about the game than they have been for most games in ages, and shows off the intro level well(though I stopped watching when they switched to the multiplayer stuff because whooooo caaaaares?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHlvQcozDAA&hd=1 Jim Sterling just put out a real great video talking about how good a character the Doom Guy himself is despite not speaking a single word of dialogue in the entire game, so if you can stomach Jim Sterling's gimmick, it's a fantastic look at the little things the game did right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AphprlpAVyE&hd=1 Captain Invictus fucked around with this message at 21:08 on May 23, 2016 |

It's hard to fathom now, but this brilliantly surreal band from Ireland was actually signed to a major label in the late 80's. That label spent £250,000 on their debut (and only) album, before realizing they had no idea how to market them. This is a song that mocks obnoxious American tourists. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-PmQ3dFQvs ghlbtsk fucked around with this message at 18:03 on Jun 10, 2016 |

isle of man tt is wrapping up today. if you've ever seen a video of motorcycles whipping past people sitting on the curb at 200mph, that's from isle of man. multiple people seem to die every year. there's been 2 so far this go around. it's mental. michael dunlop set an all time lap record for the track, the first ever under 17 minutes. he had a gopro on for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nlzxR6lN7Q there was also an unbelievable near miss in the supersport race. that guy is really lucky to be alive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K83fK6hYSas if this is interesting to you, there's a really good documentary on the 2010 race that gives you a sense of what it's like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXwyhMunrXY Volkerball fucked around with this message at 17:47 on Jun 10, 2016 |
