As the LP draws to a close, I have decided upon my next project.

It will indeed be the original Etrian Odyssey. (For a while I was entertaining the thought of doing Recettear instead, but I ended up deciding to go with this game after all.) It should serve as a nice look back on how far the series has come, and it's a game I have a huge soft spot for, despite the lack of quality of life stuff present in the later games. Also, it is by far the hardest game in the series. No other EO game has matched up to just how vicious this game can get. Also this is probably the last EO game I can cover as I lack the ability to take screenshots of 3DS games.

Update 66: King Penguin

Welcome to one of the most shameful and most disgusting displays of animal cruelty I have ever seen. Be warned that what I am about to show is not for the weak of heart. There is still time to turn back.

DS Version

Kirikaze again? Might as well help her out.

The guild gathers its members, makes their preparations, and prepares to set out to sea.

DS Version

You rush up the spiral stairways, each step like an assault on the tranquil air of the tower. As you climb the seemingly endless stairs, you hear a presence from below you! You instinctively look down, only to find a gigantic monster climbing the stairs at a frightening pace! If it catches you on the stairs, you won’t stand a chance! You must reach the highest floor!

Hoo... did we lose it?

Just when you reach the apex of the tower, the monster bursts through the wall!

No! Get ready to fight!

King Penguin is a docile creature. He frequently enjoys visiting high places to admire the view from those points. He means no harm to anyone.

Unfortunately, it appears that the Tidehunt Guild have no intentions of peacefully getting along with it, as they prepare to fight the creature.

AUGH!

Fight on, my loyal subjects!

Odd. It doesn't seem to be attacking us. Maybe it's docile?

Pfft, who's ever heard of a peaceful monster!?

This'll hurt you more than it does-OW OW OW, MAYBE NOT!

Guild Tidehunt prepares to give King Penguin the most horrific bit of animal abuse he will ever experience.

There's a good spot to attack!

Ready...

Steady...

Here we go!

Those of you sensitive to senseless acts of violence may wish to avert your eyes.

Anyone up for Swiss penguin?

...That could have gone better.

Boom!

Fortunately, the King Penguin managed to avoid the Arbalist's explosive rounds.

Boom again!

Only to run into the 2nd shot the psychopathic Arbalist fired.

Oh dear. This is not looking good for him.

Fearing for his life, King Penguin attempts to counter whatever Guild Tidehunt tosses at him.

Didn't see me coming, did you?

DS Version

Unfortunately for him, it was far too late to fight back.

DS Version

Whoa. Knocked clean off the tower.

Hmm, I don't see this monk or a bowl anywhere.

But no matter where she looks, the great monk is nowhere to be found.

Empty-handed again? Ah, sorry about that.

Still, she doesn’t seem to take it too hard, admitting that further searching would be fruitless. With those words and her smile, you decide to head back to the ship in order to take her back.

DS Version

It’s none of my business, but I’d say her master must already be happy to have such a vassal. Oh, and let me give you this. It’s from the client, not me.

Had Guild Tidehunt ventured out to sea to murder King Penguin again with that Ninja, I imagine the Harbormaster would have said this instead.

Well done. Looking at the map you guys create is one of the last joys and old man like me can have.

Flares here!

The Arbalist decides that he and everyone could afford to be more accurate with their attacks. As such, he illegally acquired some flash grenades to increase his guild's accuracy by about 10 during a battle.

With dedicated training, Charlotte managed to make her other arm about 38% more deadly. I don't really get this. How in the world do you measure strength to such precise numbers?

You think that would have been the end of it, but no. Guild Tidehunt just had to go back for more.

Huh. I guess she did find her friend after all.

I don't really understand this request, but shall we help out?

DS Version

The client looks calm, but it’s obvious that she’s worried about her best friend. Suddenly a loud roar echoes from above you! ...There’s no mistaking it, a battle has ensued! The client rushes up the final set of stairs, beginning the incantation of a spell! You hurry after her, but you arrive to find that the battle has already begun!

Ha ha! Back for more, are ya?

The two ladies are fighting with perfect synergy! Draw your weapons and come to their aid!

Here we go again!

DS Version

Once again, Tidehunt prepares to murder a penguin, the most noble of deeds.

Can't knock a good guy down!

I'm beginning to wonder if breaking my bones is really worth it.

Adding in the pain factor, this should be... quite shocking indeed.

Sparky sparky!

That's also a good spot!

Making it rain!

Ready to fire!

Once King Penguin realizes that he is less than 71% alive, and that these adventurers truly have no interest in enjoying the view together, he decides to defend himself.

Call Allies: Uses the Arms. King Penguin summons 3 Penguins to battle. Has an action speed of +0.
Withstand: Does not use a body part. For 3 turns, King Penguin will do nothing, enduring all damage taken. At the end of the 3rd turn, 1/6th of the damage he took will be dealt as Almighty damage to the front row, while the back row takes 1/12th of the damage he endured. Deals 1 point of damage if he never took damage during this time. Occurs at the very end of the turn, so defensive Limits will wear off and have no effect against this attack. Has an action speed of +30.
Violent Grudge: Uses the Head. Attempts to inflict Curse on the entire party, with a 60% success rate.

Uhhh, Susan? I don't know if that's really going to help much.

Though he still valiantly attempts to be the bigger penguin at times.

Oh, I stand corrected.

OH COME ON!

King Penguin, seeing that these bloodthirsty adventurers have been strengthened through witchcraft or are charging up their attacks to hurt him even more, attempts to counter any attacks thrown at him to deter them from fighting.

Huh? Don't attack? Why!?

I think we better hold off. It looks like he's trying to counter our attacks.

Razzlefrazzle, lousy stupid crossbow... Okay... Look away!

Ha! Won't be missing anymore with that Penguin stumbling around!

Oh dear. Frustrated with his terrible accuracy, it appears that this psychopath has decided to fight dirty and blind the poor penguin with a flash grenade.

PFFFFT. Maybe next time you should try countering us when we're actually attacking ya!

Ah yes, Nine Smashes. An accurate fighting technique that all Gladiators should strive to learn.

In a desperate attempt to stay alive, King Penguin summons his children to help him out.

What the-!? That wasn't meant for them!

You think that maybe these explorers wouldn't be heartless enough to kill children. But no, you can see the murderous intent in their eyes.

H-Hey! Stop doing that!

We'll have to get rid of them unless we want them healing up the big penguin completely.

Turning up the heat!

Mm, roasted penguins!

How conductive!

As King Penguin realizes that he's less than 31% alive, he decides to get more aggressive in an attempt to defend himself. However, it's probably too late for him.

Pfft, that's not gonna help you now!

Have a nice trip, and see ya next fall!

DS Version

King Penguin has been murdered purely for sport. It's not even about the restoration of Armoroad anymore.

DS Version

...But the client uses such force that she punches her friend before heading downstairs by herself. ...This must be how things are with the two of them. You watch the girl chase the other down with a smile. After heading down the Tower of Victory, you head to your ship and sail for the ocean city.

DS Version

She may complain, but they work well together because one’s weakness is the other’s strength. They left a present for you. I’m sure it’ll come in handy at some point down the line.

Oh my goodness, they still haven't had enough!?

Those pirates again? Ha, what's with all the reunions?

DS Version

As the lady captain kicks a man complaining about the stairs, you hear a presence from downstairs! You instinctively look down, only to find a gigantic monster climbing the stairs at a frightening pace! If it catches you on the stairs, you won’t stand a chance! You must reach the highest floor! Suddenly, the pirates start double-timing it up the stairs with an amazing burst of energy! Just as you and the captain reach the room on the highest floor, the monster bursts through the wall!

DS Version

And once again, Guild Tidehunt prepares to attack an innocent penguin.

The teamwork those pirates are displaying is almost impressive. It's such a shame that it's being wasted on such cruelty.

Hmm... That ammo they're carrying looks a lot like your explosive shots, don't they?

Huh, you're right. Hey fellas! Why don't you get a little closer to the action?

Uh oh. Stop attacking! Now!

Ahh! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to get in your way there!

There we go! No harm done, ha ha.

March! MAAARCH!

No harm will come to you!

It appears that King Penguin finally had enough of this senseless violence, and attempts to appeal to the explorers one last time.

Augh. We are all sad.

While his plea is ignored by most of the explorers thank to the false queen's witchcraft, it does get through to one of the pirate's minions, who realizes the error of his ways, and proceeds to commit suicide to atone for his sins.

Unfortunately, with the power of necromancy in a bottle, the false queen revives the minion, and convinces him to go back to being a remorseless killer.

Get up and fight! Come on!

Did ya see that!? Tell me ya'll saw that!

Nicely done! That penguin should be gone for good now.

Y'know, we make a great team, princess.

Queen.

DS Version

King Penguin--award winning tower climber and proud father of three--has just been murdered by Guild Tidehunt. I'll have to notify his children that they're orphans now.

Oh, wait. They're dead too.

DS Version

They open it with a heroic flare, and begin merrily dancing around each other, like small children. You look outside as well, casting your gaze over the great sea you’ve crossed and out to the ocean city!

Wow. It really is a nice view, huh?

Indeed. It looks even better at night!

The beautiful sight renews the whole group, and you descend the tower in high spirits. You have accomplished the request. All that’s left to do is report back to the ocean city.

DS Version

They may be rascals, scoundrels, villains and knaves, but a pirate’s life isn’t so bad, is it? Those pirates told me to give you this, by the way. Hopefully you’ll find a use for it.

I wish he wouldn't praise such scoundrels. I would rather he said something like this instead.

Haha, I suppose I shouldn’t say things like that. Just consider it the ramblings of an old man.

Not satisfied with just killing an innocent penguin and his children in cold blood, Guild Tidehunt proceeds to sell off the body parts they harvested from the poor thing, to craft into armor as some sort of sick trophy.

What do ya mean it can't be made into anything yet!? I had to kill the dang thing quickly to get his body in good condition ya know!

Sidney, relax. I'm sure the store owner is busy with plenty of other things. I mean we're not her only customers after all. Hmm, maybe we should take a break. You and MEGAQUEEN were at all of those bouts with King Penguin.

Yeah. And what better way to wind down than sailing out to sea? We haven't done that in a while.

Sounds exciting! I'm in!

Of course. That's part of our duty after all.

Eh, I'll pass. But you all have fun out there!

I might be one of few the people who really enjoyed the Persona 3 system where your partners' AIs were based around their personality and that they would pay attention to weaknesses/immunities once your team discovered them.

Sadly, it does not. :( This is probably because Inspire and Negotiation aren't buffing skills and are actually buff/debuff purges instead. Casting those on dead characters probably trips the trigger for whatever handles Bloody Lance or so.

Bloody Lance is a Shogun passive skill that gives the character a boost to their attack power whenever they kill an enemy or ally. Apparently there's a bug where the passive misinterprets the Princess class's Inspire and Negotiate skills failing on allies due to the targets being dead as the caster having killed those allies, thus triggering the attack boost.
