My problem with seizure of private property is that it is very commonly done without due process, with the owners having no way to reclaim the property without spending a lot of time and money. I still believe in innocent until proven guilty, yet the property seizure's typically assume guilt, and immediately take the property. I'm not necessarily talking about these specific vehicles, as I've got no way to know the circumstances of each of them, but it wouldn't shock me at all to find out that someone who ended up with dropped charges, or reduced charges still had their property destroyed here.

You'll be happy to know that cash can be seized if the officer deems it as 'drug money' in VA. No proof required that it is drug money, only suspicion. The fact that you're carrying a large sum (like, a month's rent) of money is considered reasonable-enough suspicion to declare it drug money. I'm all for sending messages, but why destroy all those bikes? Why not donate them, or SOMETHING, instead of creating more waste.

Alternatively it's done while cooperating with a federal agency, which allows them to split any assets seized between the federal agency and the locals. Highway robbery never went away, the robbers just realized it was easier if you had a shiny tin star on your chest. A large number of them are stolen. I'd rather see them returned to their rightful owners, TBH. Lawless dirtbike/atv troublemakers are becoming a serious problem in some cities though. Boston just started up the same sort of thing, they are mostly unregistered, uninsured, ridden like absolute dickheads, by absolute dickheads, and they're more than happy to run from the police if anyone even bothers to try pursuing them because they know a cruiser can't keep up. Quite frankly I'm surprised they managed to seize that many.

It's why serviceable firearms are often destroyed after being turned in to states or seized legally rather than reselling them or even saving the historically relevant ones for museums.

Young black men who will be stopped and harassed regardless of the legality of their vehicle, so why not use something they have a chance to run with.
