Yeah, more than any game I've played (and more than most books and films I've seen) Witcher 3 seems to nail being miserable without being grimdark, and happy without glossing over everything that's wrong. It's a very genuine view of the world.

The most obvious comparison is Game of Thrones which it blows out of the water in that regard (disclaimer: I have only seen the show)

IMO, it perfectly reflects the tone of the Witcher books. One of my favourite things about them was the endless respect the author seemed to have for these random, disparate people (the main characters) who dropped everything in the middle of a war to help find a girl that most of them knew nothing about, and who almost all died doing it. Just because they were decent people and that was where their lives led them.

Yeah, for some reason, I actually enjoyed the Witcher books and game stories much, much more than GoT. It doesn't gloss over really lovely stuff, but embraces the supernatural stuff in such a way that isn't nearly so jarring as it is in GoT. I actually started to care for the characters in the Witcher, which is damned more than anything GRRM managed to do.

I was playing a VS AI match of Overwatch and usually if the AI choose multiple of the same character it will just be the character name with a number at the end, Tracer 2, Junkrat 2, etc. In the round I was playing there were two Soldier 76 characters. One was Soldier 76, the other was Soldier 77.

Overwatch is a pretty cool game. If you're playing against AI and you win the AI will write in the chat box "GG" or "gg :l"

King's Quest (Chapter 3)

after the first two puzzles, there's a scene where the elderly hero/king is looking into the magical mirror begging for just one more quest.

now, when said magical mirror is not giving information, all it shows is magical noise.

not necessarily a spoiler but -- after he begs, it shows his reflection right as the grand-daughter is about to enter the room. Telling his stories to his grand-daughter is his current quest.

(also, Christopher Lloyd and Wallace Shawn are both incredibly well-cast for their voice roles.)

I think it's because the Witcher series is very... Polish, for lack of a better term, and the world-building by the original author, Andrzej Sapkowski, is a reaction to Solidarity and other organizations and events that occurred in Poland in the early 80s. The grim tone of the games, with Geralt doing his best to protect his loved ones in a harsh and rapidly changing world, reminds me of Polish literature, especially stuff written during the Soviet era. While the Witcher is strongly influenced by Slavic mythology and historical events--such as the Church of the Eternal Flame playing the same contradictory roles in society as the Catholic church did in Poland in the 80s--it is all filtered by the author's own personal experiences, just as Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a reaction to WWI. Geralt constantly being dragged into politics when he just wants to live his life, his diverse set of friends and allies that stretches from the bottom to the top of society, it all just feels similar to Poland in the 1980s. With monsters. Game of Thrones, on the other hand, is basically just GRRM asking, "What if there were dragons and zombies during the War of the Roses?" I don't think Geralt is a Mary Sue or anything, just that Sapkowski was able to use his own experiences to create a compelling universe and set of characters, and later CD Projekt was able to expand this universe to create some kick-rear end games.

I can't really compare since I don't have a non-Polish perspective on it, but I gotta say, it felt really reassuring when I read the saga (and again when I played the games) to see that the magical swordmaster superman struggles with crapsack reality about as much, if not more, than any other person. I'm actually surprised there are so many people familiar with the whole thing in this thread, especially since afaik, there still isn't an official English translation. Glad to see it getting around anyway. :)

Yes, it is! I was actually pretty anxious because I hadn't played a Paradox strategy game and they're kind of notorious, but Stellaris's basic mechanics are fairly simple, about on par with, say, Master of Orion 2. Diplomacy in particular is disappointingly straightforward, but I think that's one of the things they want to improve in future patches. Of course, that's a mechanical gripe, events are still gold.

Have an unrelated anomaly going wrong.

So in Total Warhammer you get pre-battle speeches in quest battles if you bring the commander that the quest is actually for. Usually it's a rousing speech to rally the men etc, although in the case of the vampire counts it tends to be a monologue about your greatness to an uncaring horde.

Sigvald, favoured by the Chaos god of narcissism, hedonism and general self-obsession, gives this as a speech

I'm playing through Bully for the first time and in the boys dorm there's an arcade game that's a decently fun top down Death Rally style racing shooter.

Later on in the game there's a quest that I think might be fully optional where the reward is your own lighthouse crib off campus. I visited it for the first time and saw a much cooler version of the arcade game from the dorm, this one with a seat and wheel and I noticed the name on the side now says "3D". I play it and it's exactly the same game from the dorm but now in full 3D Wave Runner style graphics.

Its a really fun mini game and as far as I can tell there's no prompting in the game that you can play them at all until you try.

I always thought that the European/UK title fit better, Canis Canem Edit Translating to Dog eat Dog. I prefered this title because bullies are a very small part of the overall problem, which is an ongoing cultural schism between 4 cliques with the fifth and sixth generally being impartial (The Townies just want to be left alone mostly, and the bullies are just general forces of chaos). Also it was a misleading title because Jimmy isn't a bully. He is a kid forced into violent situations due to said schism, egged on by the mentally unstable Gary Smith, and the only good role model he has is the kind but somewhat milquetoast Pete Kowalski, who acts as his conscience and common sense.

Added the spoilers as Jojo may not have met them yet and the other 5 cliques are introduced right off the bat.

I got a Vita a couple months ago and have been going through it's backlog - just finished Tearaway, which is a very charming game about a paper craft world. And everything is made of paper here - characters, enemies (though they're made from newspaper), terrain, items, everything. It's really cute, and the ability to add your touches of customization here and there are great as well. I've got a frowny heart tattoo on my character, who has nine blinking eyes, there's a giant poster in one area with a big middle finger on it, and every picture that the game has of me makes me look psychotic. Pretty awesome.

OK, Witcher 3 kinda spoiled it's tastefulness in the second major area with the witch. The first town your in there mentions that soldiers are abusing their power but instead of just insinuating that they're rapists they go cartoonishly out of the way to make sure the player gets it. It's not "Oh no, the soldiers aren't allowing people their dignity" it's more like ":byodood:ALL RIGHT EVERYONE LINE UP FOR YOUR MORNING RAPIN'!:byodood:"
