That's been something as old as society, though; those with power and wealth rig they game so their own children do well and everybody else does not. Then they say "see? Everybody but us sucks, we deserve our wealth and power." Then when their wealth and power increases they rig the game and gently caress everybody else even harder. What do you mean that tends to lead to unrest and rebellion? Those people should know their place.

The one good thing about Nepotism though is it breeds the kind of ruler or authority that has no idea how to wield its own power nor inspire loving subservience from regular people. Inevitably, generations of people that have never known real struggle or how do anything except demand the success God will surely give to them results in Ted Cruz or Bush the 3rd. True, but the sheer volume of damage these idiot noble children do can take centuries to undo and the rigging usually ensures that someone just as bad will take hold after the upheaval assuming they can keep the bulk of public anger off them.

It represented a party rift, and Republicans played along with getting the law passed as best they could, and even helped draft the compromise bill that ended the ~60 day filibuster. Yeah, that's fair. I probably should have said "conservatives" instead of Republicans. The point I was trying to make is that civil rights was seen by its opponents as a unique issue that was beyond compromise, while conservatives today treat practically every issue as beyond compromise.

You have to understand that liberals of the NYT/Atlantic/New Republic bent do not actually want progressive/left-wing change. They want to be able to feel like Serious, Reasonable Adults by defending the status quo. That is the entire basis of their politics. Opposing the Tea Party and the Republican right is a good way to do that, and while the right is still a major threat allying with the left is convenient for them. But if/when the left gains actual power they'll do the same thing in reverse.
