If you want some real crazy, there's always America's third-oldest continuously active party, and longest lived third party! The Prohibition Party! professionalism! Founded in 1869 and in continuous operation ever since, the Prohibition Party brings you right wing views and bizarre intra-party fights! From 2003 to 2007 when he died, Earl Dodge, the presidential nominee in the 1984, 88, 92, 96 and 2000 election years, ran a splinter group which nominated him for president in his Colorado living room by unanimous vote of the 8 delegates who were present. Even though he died 9 years ago, there's still a fierce legal battle between the factions for George Pennock's donation to the party enacted in 1930 - a fund set up to fund the Prohibition Party by approximately $8000 a year. Recent national conventions have been held in such fancy locations as in 2004 at Fairfield Glade, Tennessee (for the main branch) and a Lakewood, Colorado living room. In 2008 the one branch left able to hold a convention did so at the Adams Mark Hotel, Indianapolis - which has since closed (incidentally "In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Adams Mark faced several civil, state, and federal lawsuits for racial discrimination against Black customers. It was the first entire hotel chain to face a United States Justice Department inquiry into racial discrimination for violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964." Classy!) 2012's convention was held at the very high class Holiday Inn Express of Cullman, Alabama (a town whose main attraction is that it's about halfway between Huntsville and Birmingham). And the 2016 convention? That was held as a conference call! But hey, it's not all down points for them! Here's some of their illustrious office holders: Susanna M. Salter – Mayor of Argonia, Kansas (1887): the first female mayor in the United States Charles Hiram Randall – California State Assemblyman (1911–12) and U.S. Representative from the 9th District of California (1915–21) Sidney Johnston Catts – Governor of Florida (1917–1921) James Hedges – Thompson Township, Pennsylvania, Tax Assessor (2002–2007) Well, that's actually the sum total of their members who actually got elected to any proven office in their 147 year history. Other people have been alleged but can't be backed up. And the guy who was governor of Florida was just a guy who narrowly lost the Democrat nomination and thus grabbed the Prohibition nomination to stay up for election, apparently, but he did get elected under their banner!

A short piece in this week's Economist talks about how and why Oklahoma's budget is hosed up.quote:A poll last year found 98% of Oklahomans back higher classroom pay, dividing only over whether to raise salaries across-the-board, or on merit. That consensus makes raising teachers’ pay a good test of basic governance. Alas, legislators negotiating a new budget have spent May failing it.

Mary Fallin (R) announced earlier this month that state-owned National Guard facilities will no longer allow any married couples to apply for spousal benefits, regardless of whether they are same-sex or opposite-sex. The Supreme Court’s decision overturning the Defense of Marriage Act means that servicemembers with same-sex spouses are now eligible for federal benefits. Fallin’s unusual tactic is designed to avoid having to recognize those couples, which she asserts would violate Oklahoma’s constitutional amendment limiting marriage to one man and one woman: Pretty sure SCOTUS ruled on that Fallin
