brucio posted:Our national media really does love it whenever someone from the PQ says something dumb/separatisty. I don't find that that's really the case for other provincial parties. Good for page views I guess. Then they probably should be covering the PQ leadership race 24/7; I'm fairly sure that despite being the main news cycle for a good while now it still hasn't approached any other issue than separation. You really have to admire the PQ's ability to detach sovereigntism from any popular material or economic concern to which it might be linked. The PQ wants to buy a new house without quite explaining to anyone why it would need a new house, and with the newly-added difficulty of having to skirt around criticizing the current appartment complex now that a popular prettyboy just moved in. At least Québec Solidaire ties the independence project to the need to repatriate the tools needed to achieve economic and social justice, even though its project is probably also doomed. There's a slight chance that they might drop sovereignty in the coming future, but until that happens, moves like last weekend's attempt to bring over left-wing Anglophones will remain laughable.

Climate change is the most important global issue of the 21st century. Unless all countries come together, make huge economic sacrifices and drastically alter their behaviour, there is a good chance that hundreds of millions of people will starve, billions will be displaced, wildfires will ravage the globe, polar vortex all loving winter, water shortages, sea levels rising, desertification and resource wars. And I know what you're thinking, that's no big deal right? But get this, 55% of the people affected will have vaginas and that's just not fair now is it.

It's just pure political engineering. A government minister makes a pretty strained connection between climate change and gender equality, gets backlash on twitter and facebook from some combination of definitely sexist people and not sexist but incredulous people, somehow manages to get an article from a journalist who really believes that mean tweets at a minister is worth a headline, casts opposition to the government's climate portfolio as motivated in part by sexism. It's the hip thing to do for corrupt center-right power-brokers these days: cast your opposition as sexist, racist, homophobic or whatever's most convenient today.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_referendum,_1995#Immediate_responsesquote:Jacques Parizeau, who had not prepared a concession speech, rejected one prepared by Jean-François Lisée and spoke without notes. Noting that 60% of French-speakers had voted yes, he stated that he would address French-speaking Québécois as nous ("we"), and that they had spoken clearly in favour of the "Yes."[87] He then stated that the only thing that had stopped the "Yes" side was "money and ethnic votes" and that the next referendum would be successful with only a few percentage more of French speakers onside.[87] The remarks, widely lambasted in the Canadian and international press as ethnocentric, sparked surprise and anger in the "Yes" camp, as the movement had gone to great lengths to disown ethnic nationalism.[88] jesus christ you loving people

Honestly, they could make the chairs so much more comfortable within the same amount of space if there were a height adjustment, which is something I haven't even seen in business class. Lack of legroom is a problem, but so is the fact that my shins are too goddamn long and it's painful to have my legs at the angle they must assume if I can't stretch them out. I also think the airlines have got things backward: they should give hold luggage allowance for free and charge for overhead bin space, so I never have to put anything under the seat in front of me. P.S. Premium economy is a delightful concept and should be available on all aircraft. WestJet got that right, at least.

Climate change affects groups of people differently actually, largely because there is systematic inequality throughout our society. Women, people of colour, indigenous people, people living in poverty etc will be more impacted by climate change, and in many cases already are being more impacted. It's not stupid to point that out, and it's hugely important to take into account when developing mitigation or adaptation policies. That is unless you want systematic inequality to be further entrenched. Pretending that climate change affects everyone equally is easy when you live in a neighbourhood that would be restored after a hurricane/flood/wild fire. Not so easy when your neighbourhood never gets rebuilt.
