But not good old Gunther. Eventually Bernice will realize that she could only ever be with Gunther because, as we all know, people with glasses can only get in relationships with other people with glasses and ~wild spirits can't be tamed~.

If he wanted to keep us in suspense, he really shouldn't have made it such a simple cipher. But if he'd made it more complex, the decoder ring wouldn't be plausible. So I guess it was a dumb idea either way.

I honestly can't decide which of these storylines I hate more.

I do have to ask: why is everyone in Funky Crankshaftbean so obsessed with Starbuck Jones? Is it like the only comic that ever existed? Is it this reality's Star Wars? I mean, how else would you explain someone seeing a cypher and have their first thought be "I bet this is for my decoder ring from 50+ years ago"?

e: I've been meaning to ask: was the mother in Crankshaft ever shown to actually be terrible before now? I thought she was always portrayed as a likeable scatterbrain.

Me too. It's incredible. All the things that would drive me up the wall in other comics I absolutely adore and hope for in Mary Worth. I guess there's something about it I find charming, but beats me what it is.

It's like how I love it when Mary Worth burns a week or two to take a victory lap and crow about the successful end of a story arc, yet when Luann and Bernice spent a couple of weeks gushing about how they're big girls now that they've been in New York there was no end to my hate.
