Maybe some sort of tachyon field can be used to interact with the individual molecules of the substance at a subspace level to phase shift them out of place for easier removal?

I like how they even try and pretend it's a serious rule. They kick around the idea that they would have let an entire civilization die if Data hadn't been contacted on a radio by one of the people on the planet. But when Wesley is going to be executed for stepping on a flower Picard goes "Hey, look, I'm a reasonable guy but gently caress YOU" and beams out.

If people love time-travel episodes so much (not because of time-travel but because there can be consequences you can't have with a normal serial show) then why the gently caress don't more episodes follow other ships/crews/etc? I remember a single episode like this, DS9 I think, where it was some ship full of cadets who were in starfleet training when they became trapped behind enemy lines and they had to decide to flee to save themselves or attack some valuable target to save countless other starfleet personnel. It was a moral dilemma and they decided to be do the Good Thing and they all loving died. It was great.

Also you know that when O'brien was in that mind prison for 20 years with that cellmate that they did some freaky butt stuff. He was locked in the same room with the same guy for 20 years. That was why he was so upset over breaking the guys neck for hiding scraps of bread from him.
