Apparently John Oliver did a thing where he bought up a bunch of medical debt and forgave it, and people are griping on Facebook about how the people who owed the debt are probably going to get hit hard when they file their income taxes, depending on how big each of their individual debts are and how well the IRS happens to be tracking it.

In what way would they be hit hard? Oliver's people have stated they are sending letters to the 9,000 or so people so they should be aware of this. My taxes are always extremely simple to file so I'm interested in hearing how suddenly not having a medical debt could mess things up.

It's the IRS, they probably consider it income.

That's why he actually gave the debt to a group that specializes in forgiving medical debt without the tax issues

I think the only real issue here is crab mentality. Rather than being happy for people who have had a huge burden removed from them, these people want them to continue to suffer.

While it's great to have debt forgiven, that medical debt is probably huge. Someone without insurance who goes in for childbirth without any complications will end up owing about $20,000 (happened to a person in my family). If someone has that kind of debt, they're either making minimal payments that will last them probably the rest of their lives, or they're so broke that they're outright ignoring it.

Problem is that debt forgiveness can indeed be income in almost any situation, so the irs could consider it that the person "made" 20k. That money was never taxed by a job or anything like that, so they're left with the full burden of around 35%ish.

Suddenly someone who was ignoring 20k in debt with no real consequences aside from bad credit for 7 years will owe more than 5 grand in cash due immediately to the irs, and unpaid taxes can lead to major problems like liens, wage/benefit garnishment, and even jail time

I think it's more a perpetuation of the whole anger about gift taxes to begin with.

"Yeah, that's a nice thing, but the people getting this are trading one loving for another if the IRS decides that forgiven debt should be income."

More of an "Everything is bad and no good deed goes unpunished" thing.

Nah, I get that the whole point of the nonprofit is that they can remove the tax burden (probably by transferring the debt to their own nonprofit then doing some trickery on the books rather than simply paying it directly), which is a very good thing, I was just explaining why others were bringing up the IRS stuff since some people seemed confused and not everyone understands how stuff works in the states

e: And 10 points to the cop in that gif - it didn't want to load on my phone, but now that I'm on the desktop it was worth the wait. It'd be nice if there could be an option in forum/post code that could automatically turn imgur .gif embeds into .gifv links, though

No, it's actually in the IRS tax code that any forgiven debt (with about 5 or 6 very specific exceptions) results in being considered taxable income to you.

It only really applies if you get a 1099-C though, apparently, so if none of the people who had their debts forgiven get one they should be mostly in the clear.
