I'm pretty certain Marvel will have an all-female ensemble movie before FOX even thinks about doing something like that within the X-Men movie universe.

Would that be more of a Heroes for Hire thing for the Netflix cast or an A-Force thing for cinematic movie?

I have not read the A-Force comic but it'd be pretty cool to have a team with Captain Marvel, Scar Jo Black Widow, She-Hulk, Nico and maybe Ms Marvel? Not sure what the plot would be

Glory to Mankind.

So, good news bad news time.

Bad news first: Apocalypse's second weekend was even worse than previously expected, with experts expecting a $24-30 million second weekend and it instead getting a $22.3 million second weekend. This puts Apocalypse's domestic cume at around 116 million, on track for a $165 million domestic haul. In comparison, BvS (a financial disappointment) made that in its opening weekend. Deadpool made that in five days. That 165 million number assumes that it still ends up playing to expectations despite underdelivering on all of them so far.

Good news: Apocalypse had a strong overseas opening, including a 59 million first weekend in China (nearly as much as its 65 million opening here). If the numbers continue overseas and the bottom doesn't completely fall out here (despite ticket sales already dropping off drastically) we should be looking at a $650 million total worldwide for Age of Apocalypse.

The problem, of course, is context. By itself, Apocalypse will do "fine", or at least not be a money loser even taking into account marketing and PR. The fact that it won't make its reported budget back domestically is definitively a bad thing, but foreign profits making up the difference makes that sting less.

The problem is that Apocalypse isn't the only superhero movie that aired this year. By any metric, by any comparison, Apocalypse was a loser. If you go by "third movie in a series", Civil War destroyed it. If you go by "Marvel movies" Civil War and Deadpool destroyed it. Batman v Superman, which again was itself a disappointment, will end up at least 200 million ahead and roughly double its domestic gross. Deadpool is the most embarrassing statistic: barely a third of AoA's budget, with Ryan Reynolds (who Hollywood largely wrote off as a washed-up has-been due to a series of A-list bombs all in a row) as its headliner, will end up doubling Apocalypse's domestic gross, and exceeding its worldwide gross by at least a hundred million if not more. And that's off a marketing campaign that could best be described as "guerilla". And that's without China.

And, obviously, the comparisons aren't perfect considering CW and BvS had 250 million dollar budgets in comparison to AoA's "paltry" 180 million dollar budget, but the difference between 250 million and 180 million isn't as drastic as the difference between 180 million and 65 million. Especially considering how Deadpool ended up pulling down numbers comparable to BvS anyways.

It's gonna be interesting to see how FOX pivots from here, because they have to see that audiences just don't want straight up and down superhero-rear end superhero films any more. The money just isn't there, and they're going to see increasingly diminishing returns if they keep going down this road. Adapt or die.

But seriously it's loving nuts how Deadpool will end up more than doubling Apocalypse's domestic total. I mean, like, what the gently caress.

Yesterday I attended Stephen McFeely's (the co-script writer for the three Captain America movies, Thor: Dark World, and working on the Infinity War movies) seminar/talk at the Notre Dame reunion. The format was set up as an Inside the Actors Studio format where he answered questions from an interviewer, they played a few clips and discussed, and then answered questions from the audience. A few of things stood out:

1. For Winter Soldier and Civil War, McFeely and his partner, Christopher Markus, worked with just the Russo Brothers, Kevin Feige, and another producer to craft the stories. They did not receive any directions from Marvel authors or Disney, besides occasional notes and suggestions. They tried to stay true to the characters developed in the previous movies rather than the comic books. They always wrote for RDJ's Tony Stark rather than previous Marvel Comics authors' Tony Stark.

2. There's very loose collaboration with other film/TV writers. They essentially just inform each other of the major plots and endings, then try to tie it altogether. For instance, the writers for Agents of SHIELD did not know that SHIELD would be destroyed from within by the end of Winter Soldier. The TV writers saw a rough draft of Winter Soldier a few months ahead of the premier, were surprised, and had to rework a lot of their story for the new episodes of Agents of SHIELD.

3. Stan Lee does not write his own cameos. He comes in for a day (or they go to him) and shoots the scene.

4. "Action without character development is essentially pornography."

5. I asked a question about the tone of the Infinity War movies. I like the light-hearted banter of the less serious scenes and think that works really well for character development. McFeely said that they try to provide a good balance of emotional, humorous, and action scenes, but he said that Infinity Wars movies would be "getting darker."

To be honest I feel like the best thing for X-Men, creatively, would be for all three to leave the franchise. Also if Bryan Singer weren't the architect of the X-Men universe. They really need new blood and it's very clear at this point that Singer has run out of ideas, considering his suggestions for X-Men moving forward are TDPS redux and a fuckin' Mystique solo.

Even if there is no proof whatsoever to the Singer allegations about under-aged kids, we still know that he was dating and sleeping with 18 and 19 year olds when he was almost 50. Not a huge stretch to think he went a year or two younger.

It may be totally legal, but using your wealth and clout to get teenage twinks to sleep with you and then bullying them into not talking about it is still pretty creepy.

I was thinking how the stakes in Civil War, they're pretty personal and low. Like Zemo just wants to destroy the Avengers for revenge for his family, he doesn't want to take over the world, destroy NYC, steal a billion dollars, or anything. He wants to drive a wedge between Cap and Tony so the team would not function anymore. Yes the Accords will effect all powered beings on earth, but there is no massive sea change in how societies function brought about by it.

It's very interesting to see a big super hero movie with its big important thing being so small. I guess Batman v Superman the stakes are purely who lives or dies Batman or Superman, but then Lex clearly has plans beyond that by introducing Doomsday into the mix, and then his declaration of "He (Darkseid) is coming".

BTW, I was thinking about how disappointed I am that Syder Superman doesn't have a fortress of solitude, somewhere he can just be Superman, and have access to the sum total of Kryptonian knowlage. It's like Bruce not having a Bat-Cave.

Right, here's an idea that I've had. On the off chance that Marvel is able to get the movie rights to the FF back within the next five years, they should do something novel by casting an actual married couple as Reed and Sue and making the characters a bit older. And it seems to me that, if they did this, the perfect choice for Reed and Sue would be Laurence Fishburne and Gina Torres. I think that would be pretty fun.
