Even then, the IRS isn't the soulless machine that the republicans want you to think it is. If you can't pay your taxes, then you go in and tell them so they can work something out with you. Absolute worst case scenario, they go from crushingly in debt to the hospital to somewhat in debt to the IRS.

Yeah, they're actually really cool about working things out with you as long as you A) haven't been found guilty of tax fraud in the past and B) call them about the issue before they get ahold of you. Hell, even if you're a felonious lazybones who waits until his eighth letter from the IRS before calling to sort things out, they'll still probably begrudgingly offer you a payment plan. They're not the monsters that stand-up comedians and sitcoms tell everyone they are. Also holy poo poo if someone offers you debt forgiveness, for the love of christ, talk to a professional before accepting it. The taxes on the "income" can be the least of your problems
