As long as you got the Post-9/11 letter to the VA certifying officials, you shouldn't have to even think about paying the school for poo poo. Worst-case just give the vet rep office a call and they'll be like, "Yeah, 'k, just put a hold on everything with the bursar's office, you're good."

Ive been thinking about getting a masters in public policy/policy administration. I finished a BA in econ from a decent college last year, but I had fun times with depression throughout and only managed a 2.8 GPA. I took the GREs last year though and did well. Ive been holding down a crap data analyst job for the past year to bring in money and have something to do while my wife climbs her career ladder, but Im getting restless and would like to do more. Given that I has six years of Navy, great GREs, and a year of post BA employment, how screwed am I with the GPA?

A 2.8 isn't a 'lol get hosed' level GPA. It's better than my undergrad!

Write a good enough letter of intent and it should be fine, you've got enough of a background to make it interesting for them.

You have life experience, your undergrad is just a check box. I had a slightly worse undergrad GPA than you with several years of government work and I got accepted to every grad school I applied to.

Write a strong letter of intent and you'll be fine.

Thats reassuring.

Im looking at online programs because Im not really up to doing another two years of long distance with my wife. My college advisor thinks Id be missing out on the networking aspect, but I'm a withdrawn nerd at heart who actually likes data analytics so I doubt Id network much even in person. Luckily getting a grad school check box is half price since I graduated with 9 months of Post-9/11 left.

What the gently caress is a college advisor, you're not doing some education connection type bullshit are you?

My graduate program was 95% distance with one shortish trip to campus for a seminar and I networked just fine. Think of it as an Internet forum with assignments you turn in once a week. I have one guy that's called me several times to ask about my interest in moving private sector.

My college assigned professors as academic advisors to all students. They checked up on general progress every semester and kept in contact. I also took a few classes with him and he was chair of my department. My advisor advocating for me was part of how I managed to recover from a pretty nasty depression spiral, but hes also a little too gung ho to not want second opinions.

So, turns out that to get into this Master's program getting a second Bachelor's is unavoidable. The professor pointed me to Western Governor's University.. which will not accept IT-series applicants unless they have IT job experience, an Associates, or various certificates.

So, I am now studying for the A+ cert (as a starter) to get into a Bachelor's to get into a Master's.

Oh well, at least I'll get BAH, as opposed to spending $25,000 on a motorcycle for a midlife crisis like a normal person.

It's more inertial frustration carrying through from the school almost loving up my academic standing twice in a row for the winter and spring semesters by not actually calculating the GPA improvement and going LOL DISMISSAL, which I didn't even know about until something went across a desk at the VA rep office and they called me like, "What the gently caress?".

I think it was just something about my academic status with the VA dudes, not anything to do with the Chapter 33 bennies. The only reason I actually got called was because I run into the guy on campus at least once a month so he knew I was crushing my classes, so something had to be up.

Unfortunately, most universities are as inept or in many cases worse than the VA. Let that one sink in.

I had to fight with my school's admissions to let me in with my high school GPA, which was like uh...1.7 or something, gently caress if I remember. 1.7 high school GPA, a six year gap, followed by a 29 on the ACT. I thought I tripped some sort of automated system at first, but it turns out it was just people who can't read dates or understand numbers. 99% of all the applicants at my school apparently took the SAT, so they didn't understand that a 29 on that test is really loving good. I was fortunate in that my school's vet rep (who I later worked for 4.5 years) was a goddamn attack dog and got that sorted out quick enough.

I've seen dudes get dropped for non-payment because of the VA, dudes get dropped for non-payment just because, dudes get put on academic probation because they took and failed a college class across the country 15 years prior, you name it. If you don't fall into a very specific mold of the traditional student in a school that doesn't deal with non-traditionals often, you're going to have stupid issues all the time. I think the student being over the age of 23 breaks their brains or something.
