So the complaint I hear a lot and referenced above is that they will contact you at your current place of work and offer you a different position that may or may not exist. Then they will get some details about your current role, your responsibilities, and current salary so they can obviously make sure a new role is worth your while. Then they will use this information to try and pitch their own candidates to your current employer for less than is being paid for the staff currently, since they know your salary now.

I hadn't heard of them before I started reading this thread, but I'm sure as hell staying the gently caress away from them (even if only half of the storieswere true). I wasted time meeting with Robert Half years ago, and have read so many horror stories since then that I know if they contact me, I am not interested in anything they have to say. Neurosis question: Anyone else find they spend so much time figuring out which book to read on a subject that they never actually get around to working on it? There are so many possible C# books, how could I possibly pick one, what if it's not the best, what am I missing? Better spend all my time deciding which book and none of my time learning C#.

They prey on the peole who aren't familiar with them or those who are desperate to get a (new) job I guess? I havent actually dealt with them myself, the things I mentioned are just the ones I've heard in this thread. They are just looking to place anyone to get their fee. Doesn't matter if it's a fit for either party or if people get fired in a week. They just want their fee, for the least amount of work possible. It's these practices that give recruiters a bad name.

Way back when I was trying to break into IT I met with someone at Robert Half. I was waiting in their office while they went to do something, and while they were gone I heard what must've been some daily team meeting happening in the next room over (sound just came through like nothing). The lady leading the meeting went over a few things but I distinctly remember the main thing she conveyed was how they'd made the news due to Glassdoor publishing a list of the most disliked places to work at, and how they could expect to see that and possibly be asked about it. The company line was that it was just a few vocal, unhappy people, because as they all knew everyone *there* liked their jobs. This was all about 20 minutes of me waiting for??? (maybe the person I was meeting was in that meeting for all I know) Also they never contacted me at all afterward. This sums up my first and only experience with Robert Half.

Robert Half found me 2 people that have worked out wonderfully so far. The first person they forgot to send me their resume and set up a interview time. So I was sitting at my desk, unshaven, wearing jeans when I get a call that somebody is up front and ready for their interview. Thanks Robert Half! Guy turned out awesome though! They also sent me a guy who responded with "vmware" when I asked "what IDE" do you use?

One applicant (not from Robert Half) that made it to the interview stage with me was talking about programming some game and how 'C Pound' was so useful. So I lobbed the "let's get to know you" question of what IDE he liked. He said "I prefer Seagate drives.....but it really doesn't matter for my coding." while giving me a puzzled look. I followed up with "I see....So, what do you write code in?" "I write all my code in dynamic link libraries." I still haven't figured out if he was trying to bullshit his way into a position (as a network admin!) by talking about coding or if he ate just a whole brick of lead before coming to grace my presence.

Personal experience with Robert Half has been poor as well. They waste an inordinate amount of your time and want you to take all of their in-house tests and exams to confirm skills. Also pester you to get info about your coworkers and current employer. I have one friend though that did get a helpdesk job through them and had mostly pleasant experiences. Except that later on he found out that they screwed him out of a ton of overtime when he was working hourly.

A few months back, some recruiter from Robert Half sent me a position that their finance/accounting people deemed "technical in nature", aka report monkey bullshit like SSRS/Crystal Reports. So they felt like this was an IT gig and contacting me was ok... except I'd repeatedly told this same guy that just because my degree was in finance, I work in IT and have zero interest in finance/accounting.

The deal with Robert Half and other huge staffing agencies is that you're just a number and that's how they want it. Business by volume. They hire kids right out of school and tell them to pick up the phone and connect with 50 people a day. Generally speaking their recruiters have very little skin in YOUR game, because they don't have time or incentive to do so. They have to submit 5 or 10 resumes to every job whether you're a fit or not. So this metrics-driven system leads to their poor reputation. Sure, every once in a while they will make a hit because a company would never be that successful if they didn't win sometimes, but in general you can't expect them to have your best interests in mind. If they have a job you want, I'd say deal with it and just take it with a grain of salt. Conversely, if you're a passive seeker looking for a new opportunity then take the time to meet with a few more tenured recruiters at smaller or more boutique-y firms that will hopefully build a longer-term and mutually beneficial relationship with you. Although many of my coworkers came from places like that, there is no way I'd ever work for RHI or any other resume factory. vvvv I see 8 or 9 page resumes on the regular. 18 is my all time high. People are crazy... vvvv Dark Helmut fucked around with this message at 19:19 on Jun 9, 2016 |

One of my resumes is just barely one page, but on another the education is on the second page. I need to figure out what to trim in order to get it down to one.
