What the gently caress, why

quote:

He said: “My opposition from the very beginning has been on the lines that fighting capitalism state-by-state is hard enough. It’s even harder when you’re fighting it on the basis of eight states, 10 states and now 28.
“In the old days they could argue you might get a socialist government in Germany, but there’s not been one for donkeys’ years.
“At one time there was Italy, the Benelux countries, France and Germany, Portugal, Spain and us.
“Now there’s just one in France and it’s hanging on by the skin of its teeth.”
Mr Skinner said the prospect of the NHS being subject to the rules of the pro-privatisation TTIP trade deal between the EU and US was also a “significant” factor in his decision to vote Leave.
Labour warned this week that workers’ rights, such as four weeks paid holiday, maternity and paternity leave, equal pay and health and safety laws, could be at risk if Britain leaves the EU.
But Mr Skinner pointed out many of those rights are enshrined in British law and believes the Tories “couldn’t shift them.”
He said: “What [the EU] should be doing, if it wanted to convince people like me, is have a directive to get rid of zero-hours contracts across the whole of the EU. That’s what I’d be looking for.”
Mr Skinner insisted that his wish to leave the EU was not “based upon waving a flag or immigration.”
Instead, he said, the country needs to learn from the miners if it wants to achieve community cohesion.
“When I left school and went to work in the pits I was working with displaced persons from Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania and so on,” he told the Star.
“The reason why that didn’t create a great many problems for the miners was that we insisted that they could not undermine our wages, they would be paid the same as us whatever job they did.
“And what’s more they had to join the appropriate union. That’s why there was harmony in the pits and that’s what should happen today.”
Although Mr Skinner will be voting differently to Jeremy Corbyn, he backed the party leader’s refusal to share a platform with political opponents during the campaign.
“I won’t join these Tory and Ukip campaigns, I don’t believe in helping to bolster their prestige,” he said.
“I told Tony Benn when he was surrounded by Union Jacks in Trafalgar Square that he shouldn’t be on that bloody platform.
“So I don’t play any part with them.”

I think Skinner has clearly gone through the whole internal debate about whether voting Leave in the current climate is supporting a mandate for xenophobia or whether it's okay to vote on an anti-capitalist basis alone and come out on the side of the latter.

Will tbh this is the most impactful thing one can vote on. The EU referendum is a big loving deal. The way it has been organised, proposed, and discussed though...

Also, fun fact, my GF who is a Harvard grad, went to a talk about Britain leaving the EU that was hosted by Harvard Law professors and treaty lawyers specialising in European law back in Cambridge (the one in Massachusetts). The outcome was that:

1. New treaties will take on average 10 years to put in place, this is actually coming from the people who make these treaties happen based on the last 40 years of their collective work experience
2. The average voter has 0 idea how the EU benefits the UK and how it works, and they all vote on an emotional basis

So yeah, if someone says trade can be renegotiated in a matter of weeks or a couple of years, then lol. But then whenever something's not working, you can always put the blame on the foreigns.

It's a shame there will never be one of these taking center stage in the British press, and if there was most people would ignore it.

A referendum like this might be something too important to be left to the likes of Boris and Cameron as the public voices.

This is an elaborate troll, right?

it's honestly outrageous how this campaign is being waged, the way they accuse remain of scaremongering and putting britain down when they use facts or expert opinions, the debate yesterday when boris accused sturgeon of scaremongering after she quoted him talking about his desire to reduce workers rights was like this whole campaign in microcosm

Maybe it is that important, but at a certain point, as the Harvard types say, people don't understand what they are voting on which is the bigger problem. It's just people harping on about immigration & national sovereignty. Perhaps that is what makes the whole thing so utterly intolerable to me.

As someone said earlier everyone on Question Time is asking for a non-biased list of things that say to stay in the EU or to leave. They feel like there's a packaged answer and can't evaluate the two arguments themselves.
There's just too many people who have no idea and feel there's a pamphlet that can just tell them the truth about this in an easily digested way.

And if course if there's an argument about it then both sides are wrong and just as bad as each other.

We're going to leave the EU because the polls said cameron was going to lose and he had to throw an olive branch to UKIP. It's horrendous.

I've been trying to read as many varied sources on the whole thing as possible, from pro-Leave anarchists to European constitutional lawyers to African economists, and the main thing I've managed to figure out is that I'm not qualified to answer it, I can't speak for anyone else. But it's a question we've all been called upon to answer.
