Enjoyed playing with goons last night. Turned out at least three of us in the group are dads so there was a minute of dadchat talking about putting our spawns to bed. Had a few matches against a perfectly matched team that went down to 99/99 overtime. We lost but it was a good fight.

Have you ever noticed that if two perfectly matched teams meet on an attack/defend map, both teams will win on defense on their turns but lose when it's their turn to attack? I guess all other things equal, it's easier to defend.

Funny enough, on escort matches it's the opposite. Given two equal teams the attacking team will usually win.

Using your self shields and ally shields reactively and not proactively is the biggest part, you want the enemy's thought process over a two second window to be

1. haha i'm gonna kill this guy
2. wait what's this pink shi... i'm shooting a zarya shield aren't i
3. ah crap, here comes zarya with at least 50 charge

And ideally you'd like to stagger their use (ally shield, wait a few seconds, self shield, wait a couple, ally shield, wait a couple, etc) so you have more high charge uptime rather than shooting from 0 to 100 in two seconds and then losing a lot of it over ten seconds.

Primary fire does single target DPS close in if DVA or winston get up in your grill, secondary fire is what you'll be using mostly though. If you use your beam so you have only 1 ammo left in the magazine you can still shoot a grenade burst, so that's a fun trick to get a little more damage out of her gun. Below like 30 charge you're really just making flashy lights at them, though. You don't Become Zarya until you're north of 50 charge.

It really helps to know where the healthkits are and to disengage after 200 damage and have those recharging shields do as much work for you as possible, on top of your self shield as insulation against the worst burst damage. She's way more self sufficient than you'd think a tank with no mobility would be.

Its really important to let everyone else know at least a few seconds in advance you're using your ult because it combos with so, so so so much else. If you don't think you can get that combo going then try not to use it below 75 charge or so, because black hole and four big charge grenade shots and a little bit of beam will still ruin the day of a bunch of people. Don't expect them to stop shooting you while you do it though.

Enjoy playing the funnest tank that incidentally synergizes with your team's five flanker snipers.

The payloads heal the attacking team and provide cover and a rally point, they also force a moving front, while on attack/defend the front line is set at the current point so the defending team has a good place to fortify and the attacking team doesn't get the cover or healing of the objective.

I would bet part of it is the difference in forcing overtime/contesting in the game types. In attack/defend, all the defending team has to do is get anyone to step on the point and you stop the timer. Conversely, the enemy team has to fully clear the point and hold it for a decent amount of time to end the game, so if someone on defense plays someone beefy (like an ulting Winston) you can contest for a decent amount of time and give your team a chance to abuse their much closer spawn point. Even smaller guys like Genji can dance around the outskirts of the point to slow the timer.

In payload, you have to be right up on top of the payload to stop it from moving so you have a lot less wiggle room to contest a point, and if you can't displace the enemy team's reinhardt or winston sitting on top of the payload its really hard for non-tanks to even get close enough to the point to contest it.

Put shields on yourself and your teammates whenever they're taking damage, suddenly you/they aren't and your attacks do a lot of damage. The important thing is to trick enemies into shooting your shield.

Left click requires no aim, right click shoots grenades so it requires only very loose aim

She is very tanky once you get the hang of her and can basically beat anyone 1v1

Because of the way Zarya's passive works she's strongest against team comps with lots of spammy incidental damage to maintain high charge where she's also not the main target and won't get blown up instantly.

I played Zarya against 2 Junkrats, a Pharah and a McCree and ended up getting the achievement for having a 70+ charge for a minute.

It felt really good to kill anyone that came near almost immediately.

MY favourite POTGs are always Lifesavers where you kill a charging Reinhart or pop a Reaper in the head as soon as he begins his ult.

* Be Aggressive. Zarya is a character where momentum really matters. You have to push people back, because a big scary Russian lady who is glowing like a nuclear reactor is something that nobody wants near them.
* Her beam has longer range than you might think. Get good at tracking and you will melt people.
* Always put shields on allies who are taking damage. Be proactive aswell as reactive.
* Half you health is shields, this will regenerate as long as you're not taking damage. If you're being aggressive and pushing people back and they're running from you, this is good, as a retreating team will allow your shields to regenerate.
* Situational awareness is key. Always know what your team is doing, and what they're about to do. A roadhog going in for the hook is a prime shield target, a Pharah going for a rocket barrage is too etc.
* Before you activate Graviton Surge, make sure your energy is as high as possible and that your gun is fully reloaded. Spam M2 into it, and use the beam to finish off anyone who's weak and about to escape.
* Half of the ultimates in the game are not only completely negated by your shield, but actively power up your gun. If you see a Junkrat tire, and it's coming for you, shield up. The explosion will charge your gun to 50%, 100% if you save someone else. Same with Self-Destruct, Dragonstrike and Death Blossom.

e: I should also add that Turrets are dumb as gently caress and don't know any better than to fire into your shields. Zarya can bust turrets and the dwarf handling them incredibly easy.

Zarya clicked for me today, I had an amazing game with her (amazing for me). Turning on see allied health bars really helped me with knowing what allies to shield and despite being a tank I positioned myself more in the middle of my team unless my barrier wasn't on cool down. I was able to grenade gain a lot of damage, save my teammates and laser dudes. Felt super sweet.

I had a Winston chase me playing Mercy around the streets and houses of Ilios for two whole minutes just now. He was completely focused on killing me so much he ignored his team and the objective. I kept using line of sight and my jump to avoid his gun, he kept ape-hopping and even popped his ult to keep up. No idea why he was so determined to get me, we had already lost the first round and were at a 50% deficit on the second so it's not like we really had a chance of winning.

Aside from the fact that the Winston was doing his job, that's not an unrecoverable situation at all. You can easily go from 0 to a win with a single capture.

I hate Suits. All of them.
Had a ridiculously fun time playing Junkrat last night. High note of the evening ended with Route ## (I forget its real name) Defense, where I just happily launched myself / walked right into Reinhardt shields to get into melee range of the enemy team and bombed them from inside. C4's all around, bear traps on Reinhardt butts, and chasing Mercy further than I honesty should've because gotta get that angel booty.

I now know why Junkrat giggles the way he does. I did the same thing for half the match while my team properly did objective defending.
