Dave posted in that thread about ten minutes ago and spells it out pretty well:

quote:

My problems with twitter are far more extreme. I'm watching a liberal ugliness that has always been there but has been given a voice and action from the medium. I've been trying to figure out exactly what it is but really don't have it boiled down to its essence yet. They certainly loathe leftists, of which I am one. This election has laid that bare.

At the end of the day, I've never been more disgusted with the people who are supposed to be on my side of the equation. I've watched as a lot of people I know and respect say some horrifically stupid poo poo on twitter - and they have no desire to learn. They just want to stay in their place where everything is the same, where the others are bad and we are good and that's that.

Normally, "female President" would be the most left/progressive thing you could have, but Hillary's very close to corporate interests, and Bernie's actually saying the word "socialism", so you've got a lot of people who would normally be on the same side fighting against each other, and because these can be emotional issues, it can get ugly.

I'm glad Dave and Jen Kirkman don't seem to be mad at each other. She's always getting poo poo from jerky guys on her Twitter feed, and it's so depressing to see, since she's funny and (as far as I can tell) a pretty good person.

Politics is very confusing this year, because a lot of lines got redrawn. You'll see D&D liberals talk about "whiny youth throwing tantrums about free college" now, for instance; cuz Sanders wants it and he has a lot of youth support. Dave sees this as where things are going, so no wonder he just wants to get outta twitter.
Honestly, twitter and politics mix together to form a caustic and unbearable mix that causes anyone near it to become deeply hateful, so I don't think anyone should be caring about it. The small amount of characters mixed with the nature of the medium means everyone's a lovely spokesperson for all causes they champion and you'll always find someone to hate talking about something you don't want to like.

Dave Anthony has been bugging me for awhile. The dreary tone is partly why, but content is another. The last few months of modern America podcasts have been inaccurate beyond what I can tolerate even for comedy. His starry eyed history of unions beats anti-unionism for sure, but most unions outside the IWW and a select few were adamantly opposed to socialism long before their absorption into the Democratic Party. How on earth does a story about unions in America miss the Knights of Labor, Gomper, union elitism over skilled vs unskilled, racial divisions, or the original AFL? If you want to talk about some cool popularly forgotten movements: talk about the Wobblies, and not some garbage about mid twentieth history unionism. The hardhat episode was laughable when compared to actual labor histories.

As for Twitter, I think he just needs to calm down. Election years make people say stupid things. On Reddit he has reached the point of viewing Clinton supporters as disgusting. I don't care about him liking Bernie or even if he loved Lincoln Chafee, but when you start getting to the point of hatred, you got to step back a little. It sours the podcast.

Never thought it was about unions, just about how they switched to the GOP at that specific point in time. Seems like does much more in depth stuff when he talks about the origin of something. Just kind of brushed past it on that one.

Because it was about the Hard Hat Riot in the Nixon era, not a general labor history story.

In all honesty, I agree that some cool popularly-forgotten labor history movements would make for some great Dollops, but to echo the already oft-repeated sentiment - that isn't what that episode was about, dude. What you're going right now is kind of like saying "How can you tell the story of the 1986 World Series without bringing up Satchel Paige and the Negro Leagues?" By which I mean the story of Negro League Baseball is loving fascinating but it's not the discussion we're having right now.

Not really. If you live in a very blue state and another party gets over 5% it makes a statement to the two parties that they are not governing correctly. It's a statement and a smart one. Dismissal of easy ways to show your problems with the party are a bad idea.

If a third party manages to get over a certain amount of votes, they get funding and increased access. Perot's Reform Party got national attention thanks to his run in '96, so they got matching funds in 2000. A third party getting that again would send a big message.
