You are completely glossing over the time aspect of it. Even filling out the forms is likely to require a visit to a government office, an office that is likely closed wherever the person isn't working. The justice system is only really accessible to those that have some autonomy in their work hours, these people don't fall into that group. The cost benefit analysis of potentially losing a job in order to maybe get some money out of a debt collection agency doesn't work out.

Try telling an old lady that she doesn't qualify for Medicaid because the social security she makes is like 100 dollars over the income limit and she has conditions she needs help with. So now she has to pick a plan that has a high deductible and still has to pay 200 a month but still doesn't cover anything because the law forces her to have some form of insurance. I have done this.

I thought that was obvious. It's not realistic to limit people to 50 grand. That would prohibit a lot of people from going to a four year college entirely. At least in my state, in state tuition, room and board, and all that runs between 24-30 grand a year, depending on the college. Ideally, it would not be this expensive, but it is.

Because I am from Europe, the whole medical insurance and payments is completely incomprehensible to me. Yes, I pay bigger taxes than I would in the US, but my healthcare is free (there used to be ~2USD payment for visiting a doctor, to reduce visits for completely trivial poo poo), and prescription drugs are also either free or with trivial copay.

Why would you ever not prefer this over being hosed in the rear end if you get sick, or god forbid, you have some permanent condition?

Not to mention free university education, so when I graduate I am not hosed over by massive debt either.

Hi we're america. Gay marriage threatens literally loving nobody but we still threw a goddamn temper tantrum over gay people dressing up and kissing each other and getting a certificate saying they're as good as straights now. Like, not a crab mentality, but a stamping on the fingers of anyone climbing up mentality. I haven't enjoyed the view up here enough stay down there I'm on top now no no no no no you can't share it!

My doctor of my entire highschool/college years quit, literally sold his practice, when obama got elected and he saw dire changes coming down the pipe. He seemed like a cool guy but he was a loving shithead who looked at literally any loving tinkering with the hosed up system as is and thought "gently caress you, you can't fire me, I quit"

If you aren't currently paying for medicine, then medicine exists as a platonic ideal where it's there if you need it. It's hammered into you we have the best doctors and best healthcare in the world. As long as you don't need to pay for it, that pride is free. So the thought of someone giving your healthcare, that you hadn't gotten around to using yet, to poor people? Gross! They'll breathe on all the tongue depressors and wipe their asses on the paper sheet that is pulled down on all the medical check-up beds and use up all the goddamn healthcare. What if I need a heart tomorrow and some 80 year old mexican gardener suddenly cuts me in line and gets a free heart with my tax dollars? What if I chip a tooth and I have to wait six months to get it fixed like those famously awful toothed socialists in england?

Every single thing americans throw a poo poo fit over is about the idea of something that doesn't exist being taken away from us just because it makes no loving sense and is a huge waste of time, be it god's providence and protection because we bash gays so much, our right to prepare for a race war by stockpiling infinity guns, or our military making a stupid amount of tanks and jets that can't fly in world where wars are fought with robots and computers. We're getting hosed every which way but if you visibly take a single god damned imaginary thing from us then you are the reason for everything wrong in this world and we will rage and scream like babies.

It's not like a restaurant bill at all! Your restaurants aren't all:

You had the steak: $40
Chef Donald spent 12 minutes making your steak: $400
Chef Max (non network doctor whose entire practice is "observing") spent 12 minutes watching Chef Donald make your steak: $600

Btw, I work in the private health sector in my country. We do make money by being a parasite on the public health system, and fill the gaps where the system is too dysfunctional (at a cost of course). But the whole system does not promote the kind of stories we hear here, nor are the costs so big so as to cripple people.

It's similar in Australia. We have Medicare for citizens (and I think permanent residents too but I'm not 100% on that) which gets you basically free healthcare if you are prepared to find or wait for a public/bulk billing provider to be available. The private system sits on top and can be partially subsidised if you earn below a certain wage, partially penalised through tax if you don't have insurance above a certain wage, and just gets you stuff like choice of provider, potentially faster treatment if surgery is involved, private rooms in hospital, etc. But even with private insurance the public system still rebates your expenses like normal - e.g a recent procedure invoice was 50% Medicare rebate, insurance covered a further 10% plus admission fees that wouldn't have applied as a public patient, but it got me in the door where I wanted to be so there's an opportunity cost I suppose in that.

We have a conservative government at the moment trying to squeeze out the public system. It is terrifying because even if we paid the private health system more I doubt they would cover nearly as much as the public+private and we'll end up in a situation like America is desperately trying to fix.

I don't have student debts myself, but every time I hear them it sounds horrible. Debt that can never be removed from loans that are made to people who specifically can't pay back anything yet and probably haven't developed any financial sense. Especially considering how after a sense, a college education has been devalued on the job market by everyone getting one, so a plain degree is less valuable. Paying more for less.

Don't get me wrong, I still think that learning is good, and there's a lot you can learn in college, but many of the jobs for fresh college graduates don't use any of the higher skills you'd learn from college. It kinda starts feeling like people should just use degree mills since there's very little governmental crackdown on those anyways.

At this point most people should just buy a fake degree since very rarely does any potential employer check if you actually go to college. You can even pay to have fake transcripts made for you. I'm being completely serious here.

Yeah, we don't even pay anything per treatment, just insurance and maybe small copay, depending on country. We used to have ~2 USD copay, but that went away because it was insanely unpopular.

There are obviously exceptions and some treatments cost extra (usually its made so that you can ie have cheaper replacement tooth for free, or more expensive variant, where you have to pay the difference) and even for thing where you pay extra, once you pass certain limit in single year, you don't pay anymore.

Actually, if you're even remotely literate, Liberty is free. They don't really make their money from students, they make it from donors. A lot of people go there because it's, in essence, a free college diploma. They want students, that's their top priority.
