Combed Thunderclap posted:To be fair to Massachusetts the person running against the Republican in the last gubernatorial election was Martha Coakley, who didn't seem to realize that she was running for the governor of Massachusetts and not some other state during her campaign. yeah Coakley is to blame for both Scott Brown and Charlie Baker. It's mostly due to her ineptitude that both those people gained office. Baker's popularity is quite high but I think AG Maura Healey, or representatives Kennedy, Capuano, or Moulton, or Newton mayor Setti Warren could beat him in 2018 Combed Thunderclap posted:My impression of the situation is that MA is the kind of state that will vote the GOP into office if they really want to stick it to the Dem candidate and/or the Dem candidate really screws up. California could easily elect another Republican senator (once Feinstein retires) or governor, but the state GOP is having a hard time restructuring itself to be more accessible to voters or just putting in the effort. However, with (popular) Jerry Brown term-limited, the governor seat could be up for grabs considering that the Democratic candidate will likely be Gavin Newsom.

WhiskeyJuvenile posted:You're forgetting they run a jungle primary. General elections are going to be Democrat vs. Democrat for the foreseeable future Not necessarily. All the state-wide races in 2014 were R vs D because the Republicans were able to get behind a single candidate. That wasn't the case this year though. They basically diluted their vote across four or five candidates where the Democrats effectively backed Harris, IIRC. And of course the opposite could happen too: if Dems dilute vote but Republicans are relatively behind only two candidates, we could see R vs R. We were less than 1% of the vote away from that in the 2014 state controller race because of a third Democrat (and a Green) spoiling a tight race between two other Democrats, but Republicans had only two choices. A [viable] Republican in MA (or CT or RI) is basically just a centrist Democrat who runs on a tax cut/balanced budgets platform. They used to pay lip service to the fossilized old Catholics with their social platform in years past, but these days they're pretty much strictly fiscal in their messaging when they aren't running to replace somebody embroiled in scandal. The unfortunate truth is that there's enough of a history of corruption and cronyism in local MA/CT/RI politics that the parties essentially take turns being in peoples' good graces in some parts.

I love that we now live in a world where even if the Republicans come crawling to the honorable Ted Cruz of Texas, all he's going to do is whisper "NO". While everyone else was bending knee, Cruz was transitioning God's Inerriable Plan from the truth of a 2016 nomination to 2020 nomination. By packing all those delegates, he now controls large swaths of the apparatus that will be determining not only the platform for this year but how the system will be tweaked for next time. While the establishment is desperate to prevent another Trump, his operatives will be creating the optimal delivery system for Canada's glorious reimagining of the 1814 burning of the White House. He's already wrapping himself in the mantle of Reagan and setting the stage for a "told you so" tour. The only hope for the Republican Party is that Hillary sweeps the map and quickly puts them out of their misery before they even realize what happened. I wonder many Super PACs are being set up by the Democrats to do their best to get Johnson into the hearts of voters in Utah, Kansas, and other such states.
