Getting to E5 like ASAP is pretty neat. gently caress slaving away in the barracks your entire enlistment.

That's why advancement rate matters

That pdf isn't really for new accesions or anything that would be realavent to you for at least a few years. It's mainly used to convey cross rate opportunities in and out of the community.

Score good on your ASVAB, have a clean record, and have a little bit of luck and you should be able to get CTN. Your recruiter can't guarantee any rate or contract, only MEPS can do that, while his advice may sound good, don't let him sell you on things he doesn't have the power to guarantee.

Also, don't join the Navy.

Hey yall,

I'll be speaking to a recruiter in the next week or so, in interest of enlisting. As far as rates go, CTN looks right up my alley, and after looking at the CTN FY16 Summary PDF, Zone A manning is at 87%, which I believe is undermanned. I understand timing/availability plays a factor in rate availability. How far does the navy recruiter's capabilities extend, in terms of helping me sign for this rate (asvab/TS passing considered)? Any tips regarding how to convey that I'd be gunning for CTN, without looking 'job locked'?

Thanks!

Hello friend, do you like PowerPoint? Do you like pretending to be the smartest person in the room? Do you like knowing random and not so random knowledge? Then sign this 6 year contract and become an Intel Specialist. Don't be a weird anime, brony CT*, just be a plain old weird IS. And remember, would I steer you wrong :chiefsay:

With all that said, pick a cushy job where you get to sit in the AC all day.

If you wanna sit in the AC all day BE an AC (air traffic controller). After you get a qualification you will be treated like you are made of glass. Everything you do medically is some sort of 'soft down' like if you get the flu shot you can't work for 12 hours, if medical draws blood? 24 hour down, sleep it off somewhere.

Get an advanced qualification like Local or Approach and you basically can do whatever the gently caress you want and your command will tickle your balls while you do it. That rule about needing a certain rank or barracks being a percentage full to get BAH? Naw man that doesn't apply to you, you are a special snowflake. One person I know left the country with no request chit and got caught, spent a month on duty voluntarily before anyone found out (what a hard charger! Attaboys all day) and when Big Navy did find out the sentence at mast was a month's duty, time served.

But God help you if you get a hard down medically. It's like the long dick of the Navy keeps score and holds grudges and is waiting behind a curtain to yell 'gotcha motherfucka!'.

It's not that stressful, just either a) don't be an idiot and lose the thing or b) don't get EKMS qualified and skate off whenever someone mentions it.

The AIC is the only good part of that rate and very few do it. Any job that you sit at a scope in air conditioning is a good job, but this is one of them that straddles the line and I frequently felt sympathy for. It's also one where if you are an idiot you have the ability to make everyone quickly aware of it and catch a lot of ire from the aviation side of the house.

Don't do EKMS, ever. It will make your blood pressure rise and make you age at an accelerated rate. If someone mentions anything to do with it just avoid it. I say this as someone who was the ekms manager for a squadron for 8 months, you do not want that ever, because if you gently caress up most jobs you get extra duty and a bit of a pay cut, if you're negligent with ekms and something bad happens, you're going to federal pound me in the rear end prison.

If you're considering joining the navy then considering staying in the shower until you manage to fit your fist into your rear end. If you're successful then you are ready to collect a qual card and start eating with that hand. Enjoy discussing how terrible fisting your own rear end was until you meet someone that is thinking about fisting their rear end, and let them know they don't have what it takes.

Man reflections on navy life now that I am close to the end.

Holy poo poo the nuclear field as a whole is loving hosed and not in the "lol nuclear accident" way, more in the "they demand the impossible, and when people cheat they act shocked, shocked I say" like how the nuke cheating scandal broke what 2 years ago. Let's face it, it was going to come (and that was literally 12 years of cheating).

There are demands that are "hard" and it's understandable, they pay us the big bucks and that's fair, but then there are the impossible things. My command has been amazing and much love to them but the horror stories, the outright fear and climates of literal terror that are out there push people out and make anyone who can get out get out.

It also has the typical navy lifer mentality combined with a borderline cult feeling which is to this day almost like a religion.

Honestly I still don't understand how the program works to this day.

Tl;dr don't make the mistake I did, the program has fundamental long term issues, and the senior leadership is so rapidly disconnected from the new people there is a generation gap which is ironic as senior leadership usually isn't that old.

Now that civilian nuclear is in its death throes, how is the culture on the inside of the Navy nuclear world?

Whenever I was still in, nuclear was looking to start booming and everyone thought they were going to walk into 100k/yr jobs after having only learned the bare basics of nuclear theory and qual card blazing.

Meh, Civilian nuclear is seeing a slight revival. TVA just completed Reactor 2 for Watts Bar, and China is blazing trails with nuclear reactors, Germany is importing a ton of power from France, who is 85% nuclear, and Britain is in talks for new plants.

For what its worth too, the nuclear industry is in a slight panic as a lot of the engineers are starting to retire or die, and they don't have enough students coming out to keep up demand yet.
