Trusts. You can pick a dungeon and fight through it with your own personal army and gain 10 levels, then pick another dungeon and get 10 more levels (of course you need to stop for limit breaks on a first job).

This is me on my bike pretty cool huh?
to elaborate further: There are 4 big changes that depending on when you started affect your leveling speed, with one small one.

The small one: exp gains across the board were expanded and pushed up, so even easier enemies now give significant exp.

the big ones: there are books across every non expac and zilart area that have repeatable training programs (called as a system fields of valor or FoV) that give you gil, increasing exp, and buffs for grinding sets of mobs in that area.

In addition: in your quest menu (records of eminence or RoE) there's series of challenges you can set that give you even more bonus exp and points that can be traded directly for gear (as well as a sort of compass in the tutorial line to keep you pointed at what content you should be doing)

trusts are free spells you get across all jobs that can be used any time you are not on a mob's hate list (some bcnms and instanced content are exceptions). They summon a computer controlled party member who are generally as effective as a player who wasn't just coasting back in the day. So you have a 4 man gank squad right out the gate. Need healers? you can have a whole party watching your health bar like a hawk. Tank? Yep. Want a bard and corsair so you do SICK dps? you can have it.

Finally: rapsodies of vana'del has rewards that boost exp gained to absurd levels. It's reasonable on a high damage job to gain a level every 5 minutes up to around 55.

With the changes to teleporting (home points and survival guides are cheap teleports once touched, as common sense dictates now) and mounting (you can quest for a 30 second cooldown chocobo stand-in once you have your license) it is 20 times faster to get around. So yeah, good time to restart.

Not that you really need them if you go in as thf/cor but can you use trusts in the ToAU place that lets you farm up the currency for a mythic weapon? Also can trusts be used in Abysea yet?

I got the +1 reforged empy head for THF, which is a boon currently cause I'm still searching for more accuracy to get me over 1100 base without food. Yet, I've got people telling me I should pursue the adhemar bonnet abjuration as my goto head piece.

I figure with its bonuses to attack and critical damage the adhemar would be a fantastic fit once I have better equip options available to me, accuracy-wise. But given my current set of options I feel like the empy head will be of better value for the time being.

Am I just an idiot?

I quit before WotG came out and I have an arbitrarily specific question! Back in the day I had BLM75 and a full set of HQ elemental staves. Given that they were +15% damage and also randomly +accuracy... how the hell did SE ever actually replace those? Sure, numbers go up as they raise the cap to 99, but weapon damage didn't factor into spells and a flat percentage buff is a difficult bonus to outperform. Did they add other things with better percentage buffs? Bite the bullet and remove the staves? Rework the spell damage formula? Add enough other gear with the same +potency buff that the staves were outclassed by better options?

I'm just super curious because this thread was right above the XIV thread which I actually read because I play that game and I got all nostalgic for my Aquilo's Staff and I'm the kind of nerd who thinks real hard about formulas :shobon:

Trusts can be used in Abyssea but not in Salvage. For some reason you still can't use them in Salvage, Legion, and Burrows.

There's a whole big equation that calculates how you do damage with spells and basically it takes into account about a dozen different modifiers. The +#% bonus to damage is only one of those modifiers so the elemental staves easily get blown out of the water when you have new staves with 5+ modifiers on it like a decent chunk of INT, Magic Attack Bonus, Magic Accuracy (helps with resists and doing full v partial damage), and a new stat they've added simply called Magic Damage that is a flat boost added to your numbers. Weapon damage doesn't factor into spells, but caster weapons are covered in stats now that very much do.

It's not unheard of to see well equipped mages hitting the damage cap (99,999) on magic bursts now.

This is a really dumbed down explanation of it all but should suffice since you've been gone so long.
Basically all the new weapons make you the equivalent of a level 119 character by adding tons of skill even though the level cap is still 99. So 15% bonus damage/accuracy on a level 99 character doesn't beat the damage of a level 119 character without those.

It's a bit more involved than that as the magic forumula has changed and so has a lot of the game, but that's a simple explanation to give you an idea.

Stat vomit. On 119 level stuff, there is basically 20 levels of magic accuracy and damage on the weapon, and 20 levels of base stats on your main five slots. In most player to monster interactions you just need those boosts.

To directly answer the question, they made two of these:
http://ffxiclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Chatoyant_Staff

That's the HQ version, there's an NQ version as well. You craft them by synergizing all 8 of the original nq or hq, and they have the properties of all 8 except for the damage reduction on earth staff. It's the inventory reducer pre-119 mages were clamboring for before ilvl gear totally outclassed it.

is gear swapping still a big thing? When I played a year ago on my WHM I had a bunch of different gear depending on what I was doing. Like I had a set for pre cast. mid cast and when the heal landed. As well as for buffing and other stuff. Also I read they made assault tags reset after 10 mins and salvage cool down 1 hour. Did they adjust einherjar or is that still a once a day thing iirc and requires at least 3-4 people?

And who do I hit up for an LS invite? IG name is Tonic once this game finishes updating.

Gear swapping is still a thing. There is even a windower4 addon called Gearswap. You write or copypasta a lua file and then you can easily swap gear like a professional. Your best bet to get a linkpearl is to post in this thread when you are done downloading the game. Tell us the time you are going to play. Or you could just bug Frod. He loves to give out linkpearls. Just make sure to bug him as much as possible. He is often afk and only responds to /tells.

I'm gearing up my Scholar and am almost done with getting the best non-escha gear I can get (fast cast, MAB/MACC/MBD stuff), mostly just missing AF3 feet and the Tenzen necklace, and maybe a few macc pieces that I'm still looking over. That being said, as a 8 JP holder, what all am I gonna be expected to juggle in an Apex party? I figure I'll at least be spreading storm spells, either Thunderstorm because Thunder V/VI is the strongest, or Hailstorm for the INT bonus, but anything else? Are kills slow enough to where I'll actually be getting stratagems back mid-fight? Am I going to be the sole MB maker? AoE regen?

That depends on the party. You can be soloing all the way 6manning apex mobs. Usually a sch will be making skillchains so all the mages can magic burst. Sch can heal, enfeeb, nuke, aspir, buff, etc. The better you are at doing your job as sch the better the group will be. Just hope that you do not group up with someone named Concise on the Asura server. That guy had his head kicked in by a donkey.

Related, don't bend over backwards getting gear for yourself on the way to 99. Your trusts can easily carry you even if you're mostly naked, since they are treated as decently geared for their level. Only worry about gear upgrades on the way, if their gil or spark cost is trivial to you.
