Rant time. So here's a contrast between podcasts out today, the mainstream media and the internet-journos: Two Grumpy Hacks and the Wonky boys Wonk The Vote both examined the ALP campaign launch and in particular Bill Who's slog on Medicare. On the one hand you have supposedly objective journalists with decades of experience at the coal face of politics, and a couple of lefties doing it for the love of it in their spare time. No, it's not David and Goliath. You get from the Hacks a tirade about how Medicare is so sacred you can't make it efficient or the whingers will cry out and make it worse for "the rest of us" and then some kind of equivalence about how Peter Walsh lost the ALP the 1980 election because he wanted to make property tax efficient and was attack-ad'ed to death by the subsequently victorious Libs. Apparently that's the same thing as saying "privatising the Medicare payment system is just being efficient". And I thought it was pretty lazy to not even examine what the issue is and just write it off as a beat-up, but perhaps if you're a white well-off journalist, you can afford to write everything off because you're ok Jack, given how awful this government's every single idea has been and what a colossal failure of policy they are. The Wonks, who are openly lefty and pro-Greens and ALP-sceptic point out that most of Medicare IS the payments system, and what effects based on past experience do you think privatising the main thing that Medicare does will have on costs and universal care? Well the profit has to come from somewhere. So of course such suggestions would be couched in "efficiency" talk, and once the sale is made, there's no fixing it. This isn't something either Hacks or Wonks needed specialist knowledge about, anyone who looks squarely at the proposal and understands what Medicare does would cry foul too. My screed is not so much to champion a lefty viewpoint over whatever the Hacks think theirs is. But it's not hard to imagine people being fooled into accepting something that would gut Medicare because the mainstream media simply isn't interested in explaining it. Going by the Hacks who seem to imagine their attitude is a cheerful cynicism, you begin to understand how and why poo poo like the NBN just slides through yet you can get a cheap shot with "pink batts". And just to remind you, the ALP launched two weeks out and will be paying for their campaign from now, the Libs are only doing it one week out despite having far more money and also likely to time it with the media blackout to avoid ALP attack ads. It's the Aussie way.

Also Victorians, Jeremy Sear's done a spreadsheet for the Victorian Senate ticket and his rationale is:quote:progressive parties first, then single-issue parties whose single issue isn’t so bad, then unknowns like “ungrouped” and the “ask the internet” party, then the rest is right-wingers, from least-awful to bigoted fundamentalists to flat-out xenophobes Hope that's of some use to someone, just passing it on.

Anyone know anything about the veterans party? I'm near Enogerra Barracks so they're running a candidate and she seems really switched on and all my army mates are going on about how good she is. They're a single issue party with a platform that isn't complete garbage so they're probably going below the greens and above the majors/FF/LDs but I guess I've seen Lambies name attached to enough press about them that I'm concerned there's something I'm missing

I thought the gold watch and other assorted jewelry chains in conjunction with the generic office mug, plus the workbench nowhere near an actual worksite, was very thoughtful of the LNP. I mean sometimes it take effort to pull their lies apart. This one was basically on a silver platter. Literally a silver platter if they took that bling to a cashies I imagine.

You name electricians a sparky because they electrocute themselves and firemen are known to burn to death. It has nothing to do with being cute. it's how people deal with death and serious injury in the workplace of dangerous occupations

And for Choc's information and to the best of my knowledge, the reason tradies are so commonly gone to as a 'trustworthy average joe' figure in Australia generally seems to be down to Howard. I'm going off memory of somebody else's explanation, but Howard started that whole 'Aussie Battler' image and character as sort of a figure to reinvent the LNP's voting base around, and tradies definitely embody the more urban manifestation of it. An honest, working-class blokey bloke (because we're Australia and we cannot as a nation fathom an inspiring everyday figure that doesn't belong in a Victoria Bitter ad) just trying to live life and provide for his family. Now that's gotten thrown into weird places over time, because if the archetypal Aussie Battler ever existed outside of Paul Hogan and Shane Jacobson characters, the LNP have sure as gently caress never actually met them. So their idea of this character has gone through a weird game of telephone, where this simple yet relatable image of the average voter has become bloated and confused because it's only ever been updated by what the LNP either want to be true about them, or think is true about them. So the end result is you've got this clearly inaccurate depiction of the Aussie Battler that's almost a caricature, spruiking policies that both wouldn't benefit that theoretical voter and wouldn't engage them in the first place. They aren't just going 'look, we're just like you' in poor attempts to relate to the voter base, the figure they're pandering to probably doesn't actually exist in the first place.
