I was just reminded of a thing I was thinking of when people were talking about old iMacs earlier in the thread. For some reason the highschool I first went to decided to invest entirely in those first transparent bubble iMac machines for students to use. Three things stuck out to me as horrid design choices: the soft-power button on the keyboard, the puck mouse that even to my 13 year old hand was way too small, and a CD tray that didn't slide out when you pressed the eject button. Rather it just 'unlocked' and then you had to hope it popped out enough for you to get your fingernails under it and pull it out. God I hated those things.

This is largely because everyone was scared of Windows viruses, and because Macs Are So Easy to Use!

My multimedia teacher in high school took advantage of some grant that no one else in the district ever applied to and was able to get new Macs for her classroom and other equipment like cameras and software every year. She even trusted me enough to let me check out one of the iMac G4s and a $4,000 camera over winter break to finish some projects.

I ended up in the brand new charter school for 3-5th grade, plus about a month of 6th until my parents had enough of their insane excuse for a middle school and then sent me back to public school. They bought a poo poo ton of the original iMacs and a bunch of SuperMac clones to fill in. They also had a home use program where they gave you a SuperMac to take home. Didn't really do me much good sonce I already had a computer at home, but I could play all the Edutainment titles that were hybrid Win/Mac, remember those? I think Jobs shutting down the clones probably killed that program, buying everyone real Apple stuff wouldn't be at all cost effective. Also the whole utopian "Give everyone a computer, and progress!" thing didn't really pan out since that was as far as it went.

Lucky they say that hard disk temperature doesn't matter that much for longevity (so long as it doesn't get really really hot) because the airflow over that doesn't seem to be really optimized.

People always mention Microsoft Bob, but I was reading an old computer magazine and saw mention of a parody called Bubba by a shareware company called OsoSoft. There are some screenshots here: http://www.techrepublic.com/pictures/bubba-parodies-microsoft-bob/ The screenshots get boring and repetitive after the 3rd one, like I don't really need to see proof that it can launch WordPad, and that it can launch Control Panel, and that it can launch Firefox.

I got in trouble in 6th grade because I unplugged a puck mouse from one of the iMacs in the lab, then plugged it into the other USB on my keyboard so I had two mice. Some tryhard dipshit kid wrote some stupid speech about proper behavior in school that they read over the intercom, and specifically mentioned the mouse thing without using my name.

They made an announcement one time because parents were calling the school with unimportant messages for their kids about what tv shows were on and so on (this was in 2000). My parents put up with a month of this poo poo then sent me back to public school. This straight up sounds like a school full of Martin from the Simpsons and maybe a little Carlton as well.

I went to a charter school for high school and it kicked rear end. We got to choose our own class schedules (within reason) which meant that if you picked your classes/semester right you could have days where you had 2 classes and were done by like 1pm (normal days went til 4:30). Because we were the "smart" high school we had tons of autonomy, going off-campus for lunch, choosing specializations (basically like choosing a major in college), etc. Senior year every Wednesday was internships, and except for the fact that it was one day a week, it was every bit as challenging and fun as a legit college internship (I got to track Flu and SARS infection patterns and my work eventually ended up directly in the hands of the CDC which was awesome).

thathonkey posted:seriously can anybody explain what the gently caress apple was thinking here? i found one of these laying around at work with a bunch of other discarded peripherals and it is so ridiculous. I think it was them just trying so hard to be different they never bothered to consider the usability. I had to use one in college for a mercifully brief time. The biggest problem with the puck mouse wasn't the size, it's that the round shape means you have no sense of orientation based on touch. Grab a mouse without looking and you can still tell what way is up by touch - you lose that with a circular mouse and your actual grip is more diagonal than straight up-down. Haptic feedback is an important thing, and they removed it for the sake of looking different. Sadly I no longer have my old VIC-20 stuff to show off; maybe I've got a few 5 1/4" disks still hanging around from the Tandy 1000 I used to own. God I'm old...

Last Chance posted:kids in my school used to steal mouse balls and hurl them at each other We did this too, so the computer science teacher glued the little trap-door on the bottom of the mice shut. With near constant use from multiple classes a day, it was only about 3 months before the rollers inside the mice were completely gunked up with poo poo, and then couldn't be cleaned because they were now glued shut. Two dozen mice, into the garbage. Our comp-sci teacher in high-school was kind of an idiot. Most of the class knew a LOT more than he did about computers, and I mean even the people who had barely ever used a computer before. We had endless fun installing and reinstalling Leisure Suit Larry Games on the PC's. He'd keep trying to delete them, but we kept finding more and more convoluted methods to hide the install directory. Eventually he gave in and let us keep the games, as long as we didn't play them when another teacher might come in.

I think I may have shared this before but one time in computer class my teacher was bored so he decided to beat the poo poo out of an old dot matrix printer with a meter stick. There were pieces of that gross yellowed plastic flying all over the place. It was pretty funny.

When I first saw one I thought, "Wow, somebody finally made a mouse that doesn't have a bunch of extra plastic hanging off the back!" I couldn't wait for someone to make a three button clone with a longer cord that would work well with my PC. It's still a bad design because it was great if you mostly move mice around with finger movement and unusable if you like to rest your palm on it and move your whole arm.

I wonder, what's the largest amount of 3.5 floppy disk for a game/program anyone's come across? On my shelf I have "Martian Memorandum" which came via 10 disks. Google's suggested some of the older Office suites hit around 45 discs.
