Here's a "poll of polls" that has them neck and neck. I predict a lot of people are going to vote for the status quo on the day and it won't look much like that bar in the end.

Think of the EU as a cashier, they make the UK pay up a weekly fee, and in return they give them back some pocket change to fix up their own country. What I'm getting at is the EU is kind of a loan shark.

There are tons of good reasons to leave the EU, but they're all hidden behind a wall of "argh brown people" That said remain is almost as off-putting.

The best reason to vote remain is it will kill the career of Boris Johnson. Oh and that if we leave families in the UK will be £1,000 a year worse off by 2030.

Kitchner posted:The best reason to vote remain is it will kill the career of Boris Johnson. If we vote Bremain I would put money on Boris Johnson becoming PM. For the same reason that the SNP took off when the Scots lost their referendum. If the vote really is close to 50-50 then the 40%+ people who voted Brexit will want representation (I'd guess a large portion are Tories), and that won't be Cameron (and I don't think the majority of Brexiters are racist enough to go UKIP)

Kitchner posted:The best reason to vote remain is it will kill the career of Boris Johnson. In the UK, "the country" meaning the rich have been steadily getting richer since 2009, but the average worker has had next to no wage growth. Like the Treasury saying "you will miss out on X money" doesn't really deal with the fact that the average Brit has already lost thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of pounds they are "owed" by GDP rises. Like the campaign isn't "if something doesn't change, your family will be tens to hundreds of thousands of pounds worse off by 2030, and you still won't have a house". But it should be!

Problem really is that the tories won the election by appealing to racists and now they're stuck in a position where it turns out that relying on awful disgusting people with bad opinions is not good in the long run. Cameron can't really rip in to the leave campaign.

The EU accounts haven't been signed off for what? 17 years running now? Germany and France both failed to meet the EU finance rules when Greece was trying to join so they let it slide (along with some Goldman Sachs trickery) and let them in. We all know how that went. There are a lot of good reasons to leave the EU but this whole brexit thing has turned into a racist shitstorm. The concept of the EU is fine, the EEC was fine. The current implementation is loving horrible. Even if the UK stays, the anti EU movements in Spain, Italy etc are growing. The EU in it's current form can't last and honestly, that's a good thing. Throw it away and start again.

jBrereton posted:Can we just talk about the latter claim for a second because it's a big part of Remain's whole schtick. leaving the EU would be the equivalent of leaving NAFTA (at least for a while until the new deals emerge). that has to be appealing to a lot of people who have lost jobs to lower paid EU competition. the Brexit vote isn't just a political thing, it's a way to quickly put up some much needed trade protectionism. the UK is supposed to be a net exporter, thats how we conquered the world. don't let them do to you what you did to everyone else for hundreds of years!
