Feinstein proposed an amendment (4720), which was her no-fly-list proposal, to HR 2578, which was an appropriations bill. Cornyn proposed amendment (4749) which amended (4720) to his version of the proposal. Murphy proposed an amendment (4750), which was his background check proposal, to HR 2578. Grassley proposed amendment (4751), which amended (4750) to his proposal to increase funding to the NICS. All of the "poison pill" amendments were to HR 2578, not amendments to any of the gun control proposals. I'd even say that it's wrong to call them poison pills because they were actually more relevant to HR 2578 than any of the gun control amendments.

I'm not reading all those amendments but zero Democratic leaders pointed to any poison pill. They pointed to the bills being milquetoast.

So what you're saying is: There was a Root Bill - 2578. Attached to this was (for our purposes) 3 things: 1. Amendment 4720, which had attached to it 4749 2. Amendment 4750, which had attached to it 4751 3. Various Amendments being accused of being "poison pills" in this thread So it was completely possible to pass the bill with any of those proposals without enacting any of the poison pills. Is this what you're saying, and is it accurate?

I'm sorry if this has been answered up thread, but what exactly is John Lewis et. al. strategy? Usually you filibuster/sit-in when you want legislation to fail, not when you want it to succeed. You can't make anybody vote in favor of gun legislation.

Get attention and embarrass the Republicans. I mean there's not much else to do as long as the GOP has the majority. "What's the point of lunch counter sit-ins? It's not like that'll do anything, like change the laws on segregation." Edit: Just to clarify this was the most famous sit-in example that leapt to my mind, they're not the same thing.

I flipped that on right at the moment some Congressman was pointing out how stupid it was for the Republicans to shut off the cameras because now more people are tuning in on the internet than ever would have on CSPAN. And then the cameraman just chuckled.
