trust me, I'm a cat.

If the game designer is not a self-disciplined individual, like for example TobyFox, cactus or Pixel, every larger project may become a mess without supervising of producer. That's how all the Daikatanas and Kingdom of Amalur end up being such failures despite being pumped full of money and talent.

It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am.
People poo poo on the idea of game publishers, but I do feel like having that external accountability to someone is really important, even if it sometimes means compromising on vision. Crowdsourcing bypasses that accountability completely. You don't even have to have a business plan, just make an idea go viral.

Damn that's a
fine elephant.
Not only that, publishers are potentially more reasonable when economic reality messes up plans. Like internally, the writing had to be on the wall for the quality of the project from all the porting work. A publisher that wanted to see return on investment, or at least minimise excessive loss, might've pushed the project towards something more sustainable, less all in than what they did.

As it stands they went for a Hail Mary and rolled up with a mediocre game competing on platforms where the same price point will get you a far better game. I doubt they'll recoup nearly as much from post release sales as they hoped going in, certainly no performance like Shovel Knight did.

Editors, publishers, and other external forces that can affect the creative process are double edged swords for this reason. If they're actually working with the creators they can help rein in ambition that could potentially disrupt the development process. If they're too heavy handed, however, they can undermine progress, force through bad design decisions, or do any number of things that can ruin a project. Although one of my favorite RPGs of 2015, as well as the series it's part of, were both KS produced so it can work.

Personally, I don't back game kickstarters, even if I'm interested in the games, because I always have low expectations or just would rather wait and see. I can probably name everything I've preordered too, for that same reason.

Remember that Star Trek fanfilm that got Kickstarted and was sued after they did a bunch of stupid poo poo like paying the director a $35k salary and selling Star Trek branded coffee? While the lawsuit was dropped, it forced CBS/Paramount to create official guidelines for fan productions.

I didn't read those guidelines until now but, :tviv: that's pretty restrictive. The 15-30 minute time limit for productions is pretty unfair and the guideline that about actors is really, almost unnecessarily restrictive. It used to be fan films were done to pad out portfolios and demo reels and I'm sure that still happens, so while I view the whole thing about using actors associated with previous Star Trek productions as something appropriate, requiring that actors have to be amateurs goes a bit too far. I don't have a beef with the distribution angle, especially since it's hard to claim you're doing a non-profit production when you get ad revenue from your Youtube channel or sell DVDs.

I'm certain that a lot of it is designed to put Anaxar out of business, but, at the same time, it's going to wreck that whole community, so thanks Anaxar :byewhore:

Yeah, Axanar kind of buttfucked everyone by making a big part of their public defense "Well you never said anything about Continues or Phase 2" or whatever. Now all are punish'd.

As a happy bonus this will also lay low that "Renegades" abortion.

Most of those guidelines seem pretty reasonable. The 15/30 min time limit is really unfortunate though.

Pretty much any creative person is going to start their career by copying something they love. and if you want to get into something that requires a team you'll need some common ground to get everyone excited about it. Now if you're actually smart/talented you'll quickly take what you learned to develop your own voice/ideas and grow and from that new things are created.

But yeah anyone making 'fan films' that's over 20 and uses words like fandom isn't going anywhere anyway which most of these people are.

I really didn't want to put Kago up there on the level of Uziga, since you get the impression that Kago knows he can get hosed up and will usually go through with it for the sake of humor. Uziga's hosed up in a way that he should be on police watchlists in case of children go missing.

I really should have replaced Kago with that guy who made dickshitting nipples and unbirthing animations.

Coincidentally, this is also the main reason Star Citizen is such an endless trainwreck. Roberts always had his dumb "I tried to make The Dream Game with Freelancer but Microsoft wouldn't let me" argument that people bought.

But if Microsoft hadn't been there to push him then the game likely would've never happened because Chris Roberts is living proof that you can spend years (or decades) in the gaming industry and still fall victim to feature creep like someone freshly hired to work on their first game.

And much like Star Citizen, what he did have to show after all that time working on Freelancer was a game with some promise but a hosed up balance and a ton of things that were ultimately pointless in single player and various loose ends and unused assets/star systems/etc.
