cuck cuck im gay posted:Wait why are these bad I shouldn't have said "like a retard", its perfectly understandable if people have limited knowledge of all the 401k options. But the short of it is that they very often charge higher fees and perform worse than the market in general. They're just not worth the risk and extra fees. You are better off dumping most of your money into a practically-zero-fee (mine is .003%) large cap index that will just sprinkle your money throughout blue chip stocks and give you avg market returns year after year. You'll buy in when stuff's cheap during down years and be fine in the long run. Lowest risk, lowest fees. You likely have a web interface associated with your benefits, you can usually get a big list of your options and see all the fees associated with each. Ctrl+f "index" and find the one with the lowest fees that just tries t match the market by buying blue chips. Put like 70% in there (or less or more depending on age) Trash Trick fucked around with this message at 16:39 on Jun 24, 2016 |

Roargasm posted:a lot of them have very high expense ratios but vanguard's are good A bunch of new hires at my company put theirs into the 2060 target date fund because, no surprise, they want to retire around 2060. Thing is, it's a new fund that's "just getting off the ground" so while all the other target date funds (including 2055) are around .012% , 2060 is 2%. 2 whole percents!!!!!! That poo poo could mean tens to hundreds of thousands down the line, depending on how long that fee remains. John Oliver just had a 20 minute segment on 401ks after they went through the process of setting one up for the employees on his show. It's a good watch (available on YouTube)
