Bishop posted:Everyone likes to make fun of Americas electoral system, but we can't gently caress up this badly with a simple majority vote. honestly as stupid as this currently looks considering the financial nosedive currently occurring, I don't think this is actually all that stupid for the simple reason that the EU loving sucks, the eurozone is self-destructing and the EU is becoming increasingly controlling in order to try to save itself obviously the economy is going to tank, anyone who said that it wasn't is stupid, but the economy was going to tank anyway and I think extricating themselves before the EU fully imploded is probably going to eventually be a positive thing I mean the Brits aren't part of the Eurozone so maybe they could have just ridden out the EU collapse and emerged on the other side okay but it's not like they've actually given up a good thing here, the EU loving blows and concerns over sovereignty were becoming less and less stupid, especially after what happened to poor old greece

Wipfmetz posted:That form of sweet swiss independence, where you still follow pretty much whatever the EU says, without having a vote in their decision making? you're assuming the EU is a thing that is going to continue to exist other countries are now pushing for exit referendums. If the EU tries to really crack down on Britain for trying to leave they show themselves as exactly the kind of union you don't want to be a part of, and if they don't and a bunch of other countries vote to leave the EU will slowly deflate and die the only real hope for the EU right now is that they give the Brits a fair deal and then really commit to reforming, and then other countries that hold leave votes don't pass them. then it could survive.

Wipfmetz posted:I don't think the EU is trying to "really crack down" on switerland, neither. At least I wouldn't welcome that. No, a Norway or a Switzerland type deal wouldn't be cracking down. I mean if they give Britain the same kind of deal they gave the other countries that wanted to be in the EFTA without being in the EU, that'd be okay. Obviously that entails certain regulations that British companies end up having to follow because otherwise the EU markets won't take them, but at the end of the day I think the EU is in deep poo poo, especially now, and the only way to save themselves is to really commit to reform, and to fixing the problems that caused heavy anti-EU sentiment in Britain and other countries.

Wipfmetz posted:Yeah, that's the type of deal I'd see in the future. Are there really any "BURN BRITAIN TO THE GROUND"-voices? There were certainly people on the Remain side who said that leaving would result in the EU going full scorched earth on Britain, and I think there may have been one or two comments before the referendum that could have been loosely interpreted as threatening, but for the most part since the hammer came down they seem more concerned with preventing damage to their economies than with punishing britain, and preventing damage mostly involves keeping things as similar as possible

Wipfmetz posted:Britain shouldn't really hold the "exit referendums are a sign of collapse"-thing too high. At least not high enough for Scotland and Northern Ireland to see. I don't think they're holding that sign high, I think that's the literal truth. When you have large parts of the populations, and potentially voting majorities of them, in your member countries clamoring to leave the union, the union is not doing well. I mean sure there's always going to be malcontents, but in this instance it was more than half of Britain and could very well be more than half of the Netherlands, who are likely to hold one soon as well. They don't like the EU and they don't feel that they're represented in it, and so far the response from the EU has been smug and dismissive. The Brits leaving could be the kick in the rear end that the EU needs to finally fix its poo poo, or it could be the kick in the rear end that knocks it over.

It's like asking why don't slaves just go back to hanging out with their slave drivers. I read a few Der Spiegel articles to get some German perspective. Already some veiled threats leveled at Greece: "Those who are uninterested in reform, those who slide from one emergency aid package to the next, should no longer be stopped if they think they would be better off with their own currency. That is a bitter conclusion, but unity for the sake of unity has lost its value. Now, it is about facts and about getting along. That is of more value than the temptations offered by Russia." http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/brexit-presents-europe-with-opportunity-for-improvement-a-1099608.html
