Give it a try, the extra MG adds more DPS than the difference between the LL and the MPL, and you get to max out the engine and add +2 tons of ammo. Assuming you spend more time drilling into assaults' backs than poking with the LL from mid-range, it looks like a no-brainer.

You don't need 10 head armor in a locust. One head armor is overkill in those things.

So I've loaded this game up after buying in during closed beta days and then never touching it again. I've payed tons of WoT and spent plenty of time reading the OP. I played my first ~10 games with the Hunchback build in the OP, but found myself never being able to engage unless units came to me. Now I assume that's a combination of the build along with the medium's role so I got a little bored and built this First Try. It gets about 3.5 full salvo's off in close quarters and can engage at about twice the range the Hunch. Is there something I could do to improve this build or does pass as "good enough" and then it's down to play style/ability to get everything you can out of it?

I'm no expert on catapults, but that looks pretty okay. Usual suggestion is to swap SRM6->SRM4+artemis for better heat and groupings. The OP builds might be a touch outdated. The scouting doc might have some good ideas to steal, but its built less for quick play. The Hunchback 4sp is where its at currently, its just so goddamn tough and has those srm quirks. What class do you like playing the most? What chassis and dosh do you have to work with?

I have : JR7-D(F), CN9-AH(L), HBK-4G(F), CPLT-C1(F), AS7-D(F), AS7-S(L), KGC-000(L) The Hunch is an AC20 and 2 MLs. Which when you're ignored is hilarious because the AC20 annihilates people. The Catapult I'll try with your suggestions. So far I've found that I like running around and shooting robits most enjoyable. That was my issue with that Hunch build is that I could spot people ~500m away but basically not hurt them. The Catapult seems to have decent enough speed that I can poke out, spot that guy at 500 and them slap him with the 3 ERs. As for cash I have 9.75 mil on hand and still working through the Cadet bonus.

The loyalty splatlas(-s) is one of my all time favorite mechs. That loyalty centurion wrecks in scouting mode as well. I'll chime in about builds later, but that atlas man.

The Catapult build you posted will work, but as a general rule it's better to keep all your weapons in the same range bracket in this game. Generalizing could be a good thing in tabletop where you might be forced to engage at any range, but usually in MWO you have enough flexibility to engage at the range of your choosing, so specialists will always win out. In that Catapult build for example, the SRMs are useless at long range so a mech of similar tonnage at a good range for the ER Larges will have an advantage against you, and at close range it's the same thing where you're going to be hampered by the high heat and long burn time of the ERs again. That said, it's not a terrible build either, even if the ERs are less than ideal for close range they do still deal damage, and you can still kill people with them. Gonna keep saying it, but as long as you're having fun, play it. Also, that King Crab you own is loving amazing, one of the funnest mechs in the game IMO and you should give it a try. Works well with double AC20s: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=238&l=16c1c700f2e480398c70e952ad225b51bc0db340 double gauss: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=239&l=0497c8be635bd394a8ea7cd99b832f37046eb16c and quad uAC5: http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/mechlab#i=240&l=65597412c6034be2fc1153b2630f6de7a2960626 There's nothing quite like rolling up to an enemy with 100 tons of Gently Caress You in the claws. Strictly speaking it's probably not as good as the Atlas, but I always enjoy it more.

After playing a few more rounds I completely understand what you mean about the Catapult build. Up close I don't have the DPS to keep up and at range I don't alpha enough to make a significant difference. I'll take a swing at one of those Crab builds as well.

Ac20, 4 srm4 Artemis, small pulse lasers is what I use. Cool shots can be good to (avoid the mc ones) The d can be good to, it has nice quirks for ac20 cooldown, but I ran numbers the other day and I think 2lbx beats it out for damage, also range. Pretty much needs a 325 in it to handle that tho.

Shadow Cats can snipe decently since most of their weapon mounts are high, but they tend to run hot. They're fragile in a brawl, though, and don't bother shielding with those arms.

Thanks Paradigm and Aniviron for the 2 builds. So far it has gone so so...partly because of learning maps and how to maneuver into range and the general joy of playing pub matches. The AC/20 Crab has served me reasonably well so far. Need to work on my aim a bit as well as not clipping hills and buildings because of how the arms are. The Atlas is definitely easier to shoot and hit targets with, but it's size is a bit annoying. I did swap the ER-Ls out of the Catapult and put in 4 med pulses which seems to work much better. I'll have to jump on tomorrow and see if I can play with goons.

If you pick up a K2 catapult definitely try the Gaussapult build Gaussapult. You want to stand off between 500m and 300m and constantly reposition as your team moves to keep the enemy from sending a light to buttmurder you. Be very aware of what may be behind you since this mech is not designed to take shots from the rear. You may want to change the armor distribution if you're dying to back shots often. If you can't afford the XL engine, this will work but is super duper slow Slowcat Then there's the boomcat, my favorite build of all time, currently overshadowed by jagermechs doing the same thing.Boomcat I like catapults. Catapults, Ravens, Crabs, and Marauders just feel the most right of all robots in terms of their design. Samuel L. Hacksaw fucked around with this message at 07:38 on Jun 26, 2016 |

Something I guess I shoulda mentioned about the King Crab is that if you fire both AC20s at once it creates something like five times as much heat as if you fire one, then the other a half second or more apart. Sometimes it's worth firing both at once, but usually only on cold maps and only against lights that are too cocky and standing still. Other than that, just make sure you're not taking damage until it comes time to lead a push or your teammates pussy out and the brawl just sorta happens. Also, your weapons have no duration, so twisting your torso to keep the damage away works very well.

Ok I did this the hard way. I spent enough time to master the PHX-1B and I'm actually #51 on the leaderboard as I type this. (so not actually on it but I digress) You can "make it work" but it's a loving handicap mech. After swapping back to a Shadow Cat the difference is night and day for "same purpose" 45 tonners. The IS/Clan tech disparity is just amplified when you're running around in a medium the same height as a marauder. So basically my final verdict is: Avoid using phoenix hawks at all costs. How to fix it? Blah, blah quirks, etc.Ideally it would be slightly shrunken so it's not the same height as many heavies with 30 more tons on it.

I decided to play a couple rounds... 24 Artemis SRM Griffons are still hilarious if your team can pin the enemy or if you survive the main brawl once the CT armor is gone nothing stands a chance not even the new Kodiak Spam much less the poor Pheonix Hawks. On the flip side sometimes I just spasm and die without doing anything.

Yeah, sorry for not explaining that right away. There's a super dumb mechanic in the game that we have dubbed "ghost heat" which is meant to prevent players from just taking a whole bunch of one kind of weapon, but it doesn't work, it's not fun, and it's not well-explained in the UI. I'm sort of resignedly used to it now, but I suddenly realized that you might not be yet. I can't think of a handy reference guide for it, but if you ever have questions about it, I'm sure goons will be their usual kind helpful selves. Oh, and don't forget to press the "/" key in your Crab, which opens and closes the pincers. That doesn't have any real gameplay impact, but it works great for menacing teammates.

I've been testing out the phawk so far - most variants will lose out because of guns in arms issues. Some of the energy quirks play out kind of nice, but generally not great. And those quirks for machineguns are just garbage. I've not stuffed an XL of suitable size to test for max speed yet though. They're definitely best off as long range pokers though, because in a brawl people know to just tear the arms right off.
