This thread has generally been pretty good about new players, but this forum overall is pretty hostile towards players. Especially if they're new the genre.

I will say that approaching the game like you would an Elder Scrolls or GTA one, basically as a big ol' sandbox to gently caress around in and ignoring any shred of engagement with narrative is basically ignoring the game's strength, and the levelled enemies are explicitly designed to discourage you from that, while Xander77 seems to have no interest in the story elements, which is fine, but in that case, there are probably better RPGs in the sense of random dungeon crawls/glitch toyboxes.

I one-shotted the toad in HoS (granted, not Death March, just below it) with a sword build by carefully watching his attack patterns and using Quen liberally to test when I can get close and get a swing or two in (Whirl was no viable option). Dude is hard if you can't time that right while saving sufficient stamina to keep a Quen up and keep rolling to its side. Witcher 2 players are more familiar with rolling around an enemy constantly and the fight felt about as annoying as a lot of Witcher 2 bosses. I was paranoid a bit after hearing so many people complain about the fight and I used Ekhidna decoction. I haven't tried him yet on my NG+ death march playthrough but I figure it'll be the same thing with no room for mistakes.

Okay, stupid question since I'm trying to remain spoiler-free. I know that I'm not supposed to do Following The Thread until I have Lambert's gwent card, since that moves him, but I don't have Old Pals and I'm fairly sure I can't get it until I play Zoltan. Is the correct way to proceed forward without autofailing a quest to a) progress the Novigrad main quest until I get Zoltan's gwent quest, b) do that quest immediately, then play him, c) start Gwent: Old Pals from beating him, d) go beat Lambert & Vernon, e) only then start Following The Thread?

I believe that you get another chance to play him after doing the Ugly Baby quest? You'll know that one when you see it, it kicks off a long series of cut-scenes and then drops you in an entirely new location.

You will find relic swords absolutely everywhere and they tend to have status effects that witcher gear does not, like freeze, burn or stun. Those effects are very good to have as they stunlock enemies. Use them and replace with weapons of higher DPS as you go. Put them away in storage rather than sell them. Witcher swords will do noticeably more damage than swords of their level but look and have boring stats.

For me, it was the goddamn casino in Novigrad that nearly made me say screw it. I ignored it at the start, then started to get quests involving gwent and went to myself "Oh noes, better get good at this in case Plot hinges on it". So I beat the unique players in Velen with the starter deck, went back to the casino, got completely flattened again, and seriously contemplated ragequitting. Goons gave me some awesome deckbuilding tips, but once I finished running around and getting all the other cards in Velen & Novigrad, I'm convinced that those loving casino players are out of place or something; they're by far the hardest opponents I've played.

The Angel from my Nightmare

Ever since I figured out the Spy/Decoy/Medic strategy for the NR deck I don't think I've lost a single game of Gwent other than to the girl in the High Stakes tournament. I just reloaded and beat her because I got a better hand the second time. Basically you want to buy all the decoys and horns you can and earn a couple spys. Play all your spies in the 1st round, concede, and then proceed to outdraw your opponent in the 2nd and 3rd rounds by using your decoys to replay their spies against them until they have no more moves. If you can force your opponent to pass in the 1st round and can beat them without having to take a huge chunk out of your hand, do that instead. Having some tight bond cards is a must as well for when you actually need to put high numbers on the board. The special dragon Scorch card is great for basically killing your opponents close combat cards if they ever get over 10 points, and with a medic card you can play it again the following round.

Also I want to post this video I just made of my encounter with the Frog Prince. Needless to say, it went differently than the last few posts have experienced:

Fast and strong attack trees have rend and whirlwind which are actual new moves you can do. The second skill in the signs line each also unlocks an alternative cast mode (igni becomes a flamethrower, yrden puts down a lighting turret etc).

Also you'll want that skill from the alchemy tree that increases your max toxicity by number of recipes known, this will let you use more than one decotion and some potions at the same time.

All you guys playing gwent and conceding in the first round, hah. Play all your spies first round, and then bury him preferably with one hero card to beat his advantage. If you get lucky, you'll force him to expend too many cards in round one allowing you to time a good scorch or three-jackdaws card on him. Then spend round 2 mopping up and using your commander ability. Doing the round 1 spystorm with Nilfgaard and then using the Emhyr "draw from the enemy pile" ability lets you gently caress poo poo up. I played an enemy Nilfgaard player and there were so many spies and decoys and medics played in the first and second rounds I actually ran out of cards to draw from my deck and discard pile.

Nope; first try was with the starter deck, after that I didn't want to get really deep into the strategy so I went with siegemaster foltest and filled the rest of my lineup with heroes and horns. I've been winning every game since by throwing one round with spies and weaker melee, then doing siege engines + leader one round, heroes + horn the next.

Any tips for a scoiatel deck?

In my experience,

- 3x decoys to deal with spies
- 2x scorch for horned or mustered stacks
- 1x of each weather card since you'll get more use out of them than most
- 2x horns can give you a boost and later extra mobility with the Heart of Stone leader

As for characters:

- Mysterious elf
- As many Havekar Healers as you can, mainly for dealing with spies as well
- Havekar smugglers are your best units with muster, but the others aren't terrible either
- Your highest strength units with the 'agile' trait, in particular the Dol Blathana and Vrihedd cards
- Hero cards that are the highest strength, but I'd recommend Yennefer because of her medic skill

If the opposing deck isn't spy-heavy then medics and decoys will play nicely with your agile units, allowing you to take advantage of their flexibility more times. If you need heavy hitters then I'd suggest putting some heroes in there and draw them out with recycled spies. Even though you'll lack the power of the Northern Realsm with bond, one 'advantage' is that your deck won't rely on multiple copies of a crucial card turning up and so you can adapt to situations with greater flexibility.

The idea is that the most powerful thing in Gwent aren't heroes or power numbers or starting card strategies - it's how many more cards than your enemy you can play. That's it. This means that any card that lets you play even more cards or reduce the number of your enemy's cards is a better choice than anything else. Fill your deck with decoys, medics, spies and scorches and only then think about other cards. Also throw away all weather cards (including clear sky) unless you play against a monster deck.

I disagree, a well timed weather card can be gamewinning(also the Frost+Dragon card combo). Which you run depends on the deck though. Like Monsters should never run Frost and Northern Realms should never run the Siege one.
