lol Japan cuts their own trailers. Seriously I just provide them whatever they ask for and they do it. I'm pulling scenes for them all the time.

None of us have any idea what's going on over there and they're the only country we let do that. Here's the material. Go...be Japanese.

The Japanese Revenant trailers were bizarre.

Apparently it is a thing in Japan to advertise Hollywood movies with vaguely related anime. That ID4-2 trailer uses characters from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. Here's the official poster with the American one.

And here is The Martian trailer featuring Space Brothers.

I was trying to find a fan trailer that used Peter Falk's "miracles, escapes, true love..." line because it's such a natural fit it should've been in the official ones, but this isn't bad:

This one uses the line but is very amateur http://youtu.be/kbycH5_sr7k

No, I don't think a trailer centered on how awful it is to lock someone in a cage is trying to get you to root for the people who did so.

Saw that last weekend before Conjuring 2; Splice is the first thing I thought of as well. They keep the mystery of exactly what Morgan is close to the vest- Clone? Android? Genetic construct? Magical golem? Eldritch horror from beyond the stars? Or just a normal human being experimented upon?- so if the aim is to entice, then mission accomplished.

e: Oh, shoot, this isn't the trailer I saw; it was this one ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwpH6_tdRZU) which I think was much better than the other one. So do watch this, don't watch that, I guess

Yeah like if I had to make a guess about the emotional framing of this all based on the trailer, I'd say you're probably meant to not root for Morgan because she kills folks and is scary, you're not meant to root for the people locking her up because they're being mean to her, and you're probably meant to root for Kate Mara because she's brought in after the fact so it's not her fault as such

But, y'know, 'supposed to' is a weak idea in the first place. I'm on Team Morgan

Also the Jurassic World model, also in broader terms the model behind any movie or show or book or game that gives its villain a measure of sympathy by including a traumatic backstory that they're taking violent revenge on. The hosed up part of that model isn't that it encourages or normalizes abuse, because like you said, it doesn't really do that. It's that it posits a sort of threshold beyond which you can throw up your hands at an abuse survivor and say "Welp, too far gone. It's time to kill you now and maybe be sorta sad about it. Not my fault"

But like, the redemptive interpretations of these movies are always super easy and pretty fun. I rode for Sil, I rode for Verizon Wireless Presents: the Indominus Rex

Weird. The vibe that I got was that they didn't always keep Morgan in a cage but then she had an "outburst" and they were forced to keep her locked up. There are a few scenes in the trailer where it shows her playing outside and even in her cage, she mentions her friends and the doctor asks her how she feels about being locked up.

I'm not totally opposed to the idea that, if we accept that there are people who need to be killed (which, personally, I'm not so sure of), a history of abuse doesn't necessarily obviate a person from inclusion in that category. Victims of abuse are still people and people have moral responsibilities, whatever the consequences for failing those responsibilities might be. The Morgan trailer, however, just shows her attacking her abusers, which definitely has me on her side so far.

Sil's serial murder of undesirables (the infirm, drug users) lost her a lot of sympathy with me. The Indominus never got out of the zoo, though, so she was basically in the clear.

As I remember it, the narrative was, "This man saved everyone, but how he caused the problem is tbd." Once it was determined he wasn't the source, the story shifted to how many blowjobs he deserves.
