Probably, but I've never seen it. I only saw the original one, the publicly editable Google doc that we got really drunk and vandalized while listening to punk rock for three or four nights

I've skipped to the end of this thread, so I'm not sure if anyone's already done this...

I just fed HPMOR to a Markov chain chat bot. Should I post HPMORbot ideas? It could also go live on twitter and talk to HPMOR fans, if we want.

It's probably worth making a Tumblr of. There's also the Let's Read HPMOR Thread which would be interested.

HPMOR is so bad that I legitimately can't even get through Let's Reads of it or whatever they're called.

I have no idea why people bother arguing over whether it's scientifically accurate, or really rational, when just on a basic page-to-page basis it's the worst thing ever

Same here. I'm happy when we we do something cool or prove the existence of a fundamental particle or something, and I believe science is how we understand the universe and all, but I'm not fascinated by the boring stuff. Just tell me when we land on a new celestial body, and when I can get a cooler phone/computer part, thanks.

I think it's kinda fascinating, because someone has created a didactic philosophical "novel," with an actual fan base, worse that Atlas Shrugged itself.

When I was a dumb libertarian teenager I watched a lot of Penn & Teller's Bullshit, and in it there was an episode where they get a bunch of cheerleaders to literally cheerlead science, then in another episode they spent the entire time weaseling their way around the consensus on global warming because they didn't agree with it politically. I think that pretty much sums up all of this pretty succinctly.

My dumb libertarian-symp phase included both P&T BS and Penn's "radio show" / podcast with a libertarian friend of his. So shameful.

Another Bullshit episode featured them claiming it's impossible for it to ever be worthwhile to recycle anything other than aluminum and maybe glass so shut the gently caress up about recycling you drat hippies, consume and throw poo poo away it's better for the planet.

On one hand, I'm glad I got my insufferable right-wing teen phase out of the way before that P&T show, or I would have been even more insufferable. On the other, Rush was big back then, so it was still pretty bad.

That is hilarious, though. "Science is right...Unless it hurts our precious straight white boy feels."

They actually pointed out their own hypocrisy once - they were cheerleading pesticides in one episode and then in the next episode calling them dangerous and horrible, but then just kinda sidestepped the whole thing with a joke and kept on going. Years later they did an AMA in which they stated something along the lines of "I don't think we were ever wrong on the show, at least with the information available at the time."

The earlier episodes (where they were just focused on scams and woo and stuff that wasn't basically libertarian propaganda) were pretty good at least :smith:

I was so looking forward to Bullshit! because I was really Penn & Teller and Skeptical Enquirer and that "I embrace science and am rational and skeptical, unlike the sheeple" attitude and would never have believed that its lasting legacy would be demonstrating the bullshit-in-action behind its own paradigm.

I was kinda let down by the earlier episodes too though, because I had been anticipating a really thorough and persuasive takedown, something that would convince [whomever] of how wrong they are, but it was just preaching to the choir and Penn going "GET A LOAD OF THIS MORON". Whatever you believed going into it, you'd probably believe that even more afterwards. But they were picking easy targets so it was just the attitude that was a problem, and it made me realize that was what my attitude looked like from the outside.

The people the Victorians smashed aren’t yowling.

Old black guys in the West Indies love the British, who caned them in school so they’d learn some drat manners, and are outraged that the British won’t cane their immigrant grandchildren.

When the British Empire sewed rebellious Muslims into pig skins, shot them from cannons, and buried the bits mashed up with pig bones, Muslims loved, respected, and fought for the British. And nationalist Brits like Kipling loved their brave and loyal Muslim sidekicks. Contrast with today.

It didn’t stop in 1900.

The Filipinos love the Americans, who tortured their separatist rebels to death.

The Germans and Japanese love the Americans and the Germans love the British, who slaughtered their children in their beds by the hundreds of thousand.

People (men at least) love and respect strength, despise weakness. All the groups complaining most now (black Americans, black South Africans, Aborigines of all sorts) are the ones most molly-coddled by the Victorians.

Then why make it about skepticism in the first place?

It's a nice way to have your cake and eat it, too. If you convince people, well, that's one more skeptic or libertarian made—job well done! If you're called out for promoting bad ideology and untrue facts, then it's a comedy show, it's not like you're being serious!

I fundamentally don't understand the question, what is it about skepticism specifically that makes it unsuitable for humour? Do you also get upset at mockumentaries because they're not taking their subject matter seriously either?

As far as I can tell the entire thrust of the show from the beginning was "jokey jokes first, serious criticism second". If you can find something that contradicts that sentiment then by all means I'll admit I'm wrong, but you should probably dislike Bullshit because they get poo poo factually wrong, not because they make fun of people on a comedy program.

It's not the skepticism/comedy divide that's untenable.

It's the making a point/being intellectually dishonest divide.

I can tell a joke that isn't an accurate reflection of reality, but when I do, I kinda lose the chance to be making a serious point.

That's fine! Criticise them for their intellectual dishonesty, not for advertising and promoting a comedy show and then choosing not to engage their opponents in reasoned debates with professional arguments.
