I think he probably dated a bunch of girls that had self esteem issues and let him walk all over them, cheat on them, etc, and then he married someone that had some sense of self worth and he couldn't hack it. Imagine the hardship he went through not having his lovely behavior be catered to, and his needs not be the sole focus of the relationship. He figured he could have the best of both worlds and start an open relationship, which allowed his now distant wife to uncover, record, and articulate the emerging paradigm from her yoga instructor. There's nothing I can imagine that excuses that writing.
