The latter. Space is big so you'll rarely ever see other players at all unless you go to popular areas. I'm doing various engineer things and see other players pretty often, although most don't want to interact too much.

The only time you won't see players is during typical Australian hours because the internet gods hate them.

Even fully loaded with goodies I have yet to find a pirate NPC that can keep up with my T6 4eng 2shield chain boost. The only one time I died is because the pirate somehow spawned in front of me and had time to rip through my cardboard armor. I am not even sure the stock weapons are functional. Might rip them out for mass loss.

Just found my first ringed planet I could land on. Amazing. One jump out of the coal dark region (which turned out to be dark as gently caress)

Had a little picnic.

Now headed back across to that American and Elephant nebula.

That was my first exploration, but not to the coal dark, but North American and Elephant Trunk nebulae. I also hit up the NGC 7822 nebula; it's that line of really bright stars, visible from the Elephant Trunk nebula. It is a really awesome place with lots of Type O blue-white stars and black holes.

I should try hitting Robigo and Sothis sometime soon for some out-of-the-bubble action.
I remember the very first system I <first> discovered... seeing my name attached to a star was mind blowing. After exploring for 8 hours straight it may have lost its charm but I have yet to come across earthlikes that I can put my name on.

If you can handle the 400ly jumps doing the 1mill and up missions can net you some quick creds in under a few hours if you load up your cargo hold on them. I was doing them over the weekend with a friend. He had lost his 'Conda to NPC Pirates while out on a spin, and managed to grind himself back into a new Anaconda within a week doing the missions from Sothis.

Momus Reach is also a good place to buy ships for that 15% discount and getting them outiffted in LTT 1349 will be the closest place for a shiny new FSD A-Class in that part of the system I believe.

So I've been away from the game for about 6 months before planetary landings. I really enjoyed the game mechanics, but the depth and storyline seemed lacking to let you forget it seemed to be a big grindfest. Is it flushed out enough now to have fun playing it and not notice the time invested and regret it? I liked eve for how you could influence what happened, but the game isn't fun. Is there a happy medium in this, or any other game out now if not this one?

No, to get Level 4/5 Dirty Drive Tuning you need to grind up a completely different exploration guy who only does FSD tinkering to 3 :suicide:

This is how you find Specialised Legacy Firmware:

Orbiting around Earth (and possibly other inhabited Earthlikes) are abandoned satellites, identified as 'Encoded Data' Signal Sources. Scanning these satellites is guaranteed to give you at least one SLF, and is by far the fastest way of finding them.

Lesson learned here is always stop for encoded signal POIs. I stop at just about every UnId signal just to see what useful stuff I might get. I now have databanks full of random data. Degraded emissions not so much, that is usually just black market vendor fodder with some focus crystals and stuff thrown in.

Once stopped at a POI with nothing but 50 or so toxic waste containers. KEEP SPACE CLEAN!

Finished grinding up the rank for my icourier last night. :toot: Also, Shu Babassi long-range hauling missions gave me enough credits to a-fit the courier.

Does anyone have any fit recommendations? Also, do empty cargo racks count for mass for speed and boost speed? I know they don't for FSD jumps.

Define farm. They're still doable if you pick your targets wisely and use the cops to help you kill things and you'll earn credits. You can't just sit there and kill things for hours on end either.

I have my courier fitted for generalist stuff, so there's a size 3 (8) Cargo rack, an SRV bay, a fuel scoop and an interdictor in there. I have gimbled Medium Pulses on my wings, and a Plasma Accelerator (that I suck at aiming :v:) under the nose. I've elected for the Lightweight Alloy bulkheads to conserve mass for FSD jumps, and rely on my incredibly tanky shields and decent maneuverability when I get into fights.

Utility Hardpoints are: Heatsink, Shield Boost, Wake Scanner, Chaff

You can make some adjustments here and there to specialize. You might also want to have a fixed or gimballed Cannon, or a railgun, instead of the Plasma.

If you wanted to be FIGHT, I'd get a better armor for the bulkheads, and maybe stack on another shield booster instead of like the wake scanner or something. You can also replace the cargo rack and SRV, and possibly fuel scoop, with hull reinforcements. There's kind of a balance you have to decide on, because increasing your mass will have a trade-off in the effectiveness of your shields and maneuvering, which are your strong assets here.

8 Is pretty much the best bet you're gonna have for cargo capacity, so it's small batch deliveries and salvage ops for you. I keep it mounted so I can pick up illicit palladium from POI on planets. I prefer to have a fixed weapon under the nosecone so I can use it to shoot at base generators from the air.

Dogfighting against chump NPCs, I usually put zero pips into engine on this thing so I can have 4 in weapons and 2 in SYS. You're still plenty maneuverable if you're using your vertical thrusters to tighten your pitches, and you need those 4 weapon pips in order to sustain the thermal needs on those medium-size lasers. In my experience, this works great against most things smaller than a Python. I wouldn't recommend trying this against a Vulture, or anything that's usually covered completely in turrets, like a Python or Anaconda. Then you wanna focus your pips in engine and sys until you get into their blind spot, and re-route power. Of course, you can also be pretty safe if you're doing this in High RES and can get some cops to come help.

OK just before I make an exploration ship, is it a bad idea to put weapons on one? I understand that you really shouldn't be in a fight but being completely defenceless sort of rubs me the wrong way. On top of that, do you really need a cargo bay? I am looking a Dimondback Explorer and I am wondering weather to just load almost all of it with fuel tanks scans a decent fuel scoop and a discovery scanner.

Edit: Anyway to get permissions to see the Discord or do you have to be a DF member for that?

I do hauling without weapons, so long as you can outrun them you are fine. 4a fsd, 4a power dist, 4a thrusters, a minor shield for accidentally hitting things and you will be fine. By the time the pirate is lined up to get a shot you will have chain boosted out of range and mashed FSD/SC. I did stacks of 20 hauling mission in my cardboard t6 without weapons and the only time I ever got close to being killed was when the pirate spawned in front of me instead of behind. It was hella fun though. Kept getting all kinds of pirate love-letters.

I did my first exploration jaunt in a Cobra MkIII. I didn't have weapons, but did put heat sinks in the utility slots for the times I crashed into stars while watching Netflix. I didn't bring a cargo bay or a SRV, but I did bring an auto-field maintenance unit (AMFU) and an extra fuel tank. DBE has twice the fuel in the main tank as a Cobra, so you could probably get away with two of the following: AMFU, SRV, or Cargo in addition to the mandatory scoop, shields (some don't think it's mandatory), discovery scanner, detailed surface scanner.

Once you're a couple hundred ly out of the bubble, you're not going to run into any NPCs at all (unless you have a mission open), so you will have absolutely no use for weapons for the vast majority of the trip - they'll just be dead weight dragging down your jump range and fuel efficiency.

There's not much use for a cargo bay out in the black, either. For your first few thousand ly you'll be able to find ship wreckage in USSes, but the only thing they'll contain is data caches worth maybe 1k credits; barely worth the time spent dropping in and scooping them.
