I get really uncomfortable with the "biology" arguments. Like when people were arguing over whether being gay was a choice or something they were born as. It shouldn't matter, and pretending it does puts everything into outdated religious frameworks of whether something is acceptable or sinful.

In non-gender-related news, Puerto Rico may not be (quite) as hosed as it appeared (for now) (maybe). Strange bedfellows on both sides of this.

It would matter if the choice had an inherently correct or incorrect option, but it doesn't because there's no moral problem with transgender people choosing to live their life the way they wish to identify. Why does it matter?

Tatum Girlparts posted:So what the gently caress is this bill actually Puerto Rico doesn't get to declare bankruptcy and let a court handle restructuring the debts. Instead an unelected commission gets to restructure its debts on its behalf. Paul Ryan's office specifically likens it to the boards which oversaw NYC's debt crisis in 1975 and DC in 1996. EDIT: Also the minimum wage for 20-24 year olds in Puerto Rico is lowered to $4.25 an hour from $7.25. ComradeCosmobot fucked around with this message at 18:40 on Jun 29, 2016 |

I really just don't see what a good end for PR is here.

DACK FAYDEN posted:Why is it a big deal? It depends on the context and who is involved in the conversation. If you're trying to win basic rights from a populace with an entrenched ideology, that doesn't understand you at best and hates you at worst, claiming to be born a certain way, and to not to have chosen to be a certain way, can more easily let you claim the moral high-ground in the eyes of the the public. Most people, sadly, are not yet at the point where they're willing to allow people to live whatever way they wish, for some reason. I wish everyone concentrated on themselves and how they're leading their lives instead of having huge problems with random people doing whatever. But, introspection is hard; it's much easier and more satisfying to judge and alienate others.

I really just don't see what a good end for PR is here. Not really, no. This bill managed to pass the House before it went into recess, and they aren't going to come back before PR's time runs out, so there's no chance to amend it. The best thing you can say is that it keeps someone's hand on the tiller so we aren't in totally uncharted waters. haveblue fucked around with this message at 18:51 on Jun 29, 2016 |

Nah, that's the whole point of bankruptcy, to prioritize who gets the money. We could allow PR to declare bankruptcy and keep services running. Of course, that means investors on the mainland would lose more money so....

Also, Puerto Rico doesn't seem to have agitated especially hard for either statehood or independence. It's apparently a point of contention there.
