I didn't even know Poledouris scored Robocop 3 (which I haven't seen) but what I love about the Starship Troopers score is that it ties into the satirical feel of the movie so perfectly and sincerely. The movie is a complete sci-fi satire about fascism and his music sounds like what you'd hear in a propaganda film but it's still so loving good; it's not ironic or a joke, it's genuinely rousing and anthemic as you'd hear in a piece of right-wing propaganda but at the same time it's just stellar on a technical level and as a piece of music which sums up the whole film, really. having watched the movie recently I'm completely convinced that it's a genuine masterpiece, not just as a sci-fi action movie (which it absolutely could be) but as a piss-take on a fascist warmongering regime and Poledouris' score reflects it perfectly.

Pretty much all of the Road to Perdition score is ace, but I've never liked how he shoves in "zany" themes for characters, like for Jude Law's character's theme is the one that gets the mandatory banjo treatment in that score.

Surprise! Score to the new Independence Day movie is nowhere close to as good as David Arnold's for the original.

I liked the second one better. The first doesn't hold up and is incredibly boring to me now. The first half is good though. The only thing I came away loving from the first after all these years was the score. The second one is pure garbage schlock and it knows it. I was never bored and pretty much laughing constantly. I'll probably never watch it again though.

I've been listening to the rest of the GOT S6 soundtrack this morning, and it may be the best overall score from any season yet. Most tracks are variations of existing themes (THEMES!), but they're great spins on music we already recognize. Really good stuff.

Speaking of Djawadi, I was pretty bummed out that the Warcraft movie had such a forgettable score; he's competent enough and the source material has tons and tons of really rad music in it. I would've preferred if they'd used Blizzard's own music guys for the movie but maybe the studio wanted Djawadi because he's the Game of Thrones guy.

I think it shortly referenced the main theme of World of Warcraft during the credits, but that might have been it. I'm not really that familiar with Warcraft's music, outside of the short jingles in Hearthstone. I do like "Echoes of War - The Music of Blizzard Entertainment" by Eminence Symphony Orchestra though. It is a two disc album with orchestral medleys from Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hIeWJlCxMw It has a Starcraft 1 Zerg medley that is both bizarre and beautiful. That's true, the end credits music was straight from the original World of Warcraft and there was one small musical nod earlier in the movie to something I've now forgotten.

Darthemed posted:Yo CelticPredator, on the topic of themes, do you have a favorite James Horner score? I do! Gonna say Aliens. I know it's mostly a rushed, ripped off score, but there's a lot of really great energy there. Maybe out of pure anger and frustration, but it's there. And the slow, almost simplistic parts of the score own. That foreboding echoing *dun dun dun dun* that moves throughout whenever the Aliens are present. I love it. But you know what else is a great score that I kind of forgot he did? Casper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoyNg0Np2ZU&t=182s I don't know what it is about this part, but it gets to me. Right deep down in the soul. It's astounding. Horner is a favorite of mine, but I only dig a handful of scores from him and his last stuff I didn't care for at all. Especially the Amazing Spider-Man score. Both of them were pretty loving weak. I know people say "Well, Elfman's score is bland and I don't remember it." Maybe it's because I'm a MILLENNIAL, but that score is incredibly iconic to me. I was humming it out of the theater when I saw it. I'm curious what the new film's score will be, but I just don't think it'll ever match the original, you know?

Braveheart and Legends of the Fall have excellent scores. Horner had a nice little run in the 90s right up until around A Beautiful Mind, where he just gave up and repeated himself over and over completely.
