Trip report: just got back from the local Labour party AGM. It was actually pretty interesting talking to people from various different positions in the party. There was a debate on the current state of the leadership, which seemed to be a split into essentially three groups: 1) People who are active in the national party, and have been for years. I don't want to call them all Blairites, but they mostly are, or at least they've given in to the idea that Socialism can't win elections. They are behind the PLP, and think they're doing the right thing to remove an ineffective leader. There were a lot of anecdotes about how difficult it was to get the Labour party central office to give them even a hint of support during the referendum campaign, which they blame on Corbyn personally. There was a belief that a "strong" leader would have been out in the public eye and making his case despite any difficulties from the press. Lots of talk about electability, and the importance of getting into power. I didn't hate them as much as I expected to, except for one extremely shouty wanker who was sad the PLP had waited so long, and accused everyone who suggested the coup had been planed in advance of being a conspiracy theorist (and argued that Corbyn was a dictator ruling the party with an iron fist). This group included about half the local and county councillors. 2) People who are more active in local and parish councils. They are generally lukewarm at best in support of Corbyn - they like him personally and think he would be a very good local MP, and that if they had more people like him the Labour party would win a lot more elections, but they don't think he's been a very effective leader. A lot of them are pissed off at the way the PLP has handled itself since the election, and think they should support the leader even if they don't like him. 3) New members (including me). More split than I expected, mostly very strong Corbyn supporters but with quite a few agreeing with one of the other two groups. There was one woman who said she joined the Labour party in the last 3 months, but would never vote for them as long as Corbyn was leader, no idea what that was about. Much wider age range than I expected too, and including quite a few people who left during the Blair years and recently rejoined. I suspect the third group was the largest, because the meeting voted 2:1 in favour of sending a letter to the PLP telling them to stop being such fuckwits and get behind the leader as long as he is the leader. Was a fun night, would recommend to others.
