They can't seesaw though. He's twice as heavy and at least a foot taller than her. He's just carrying her while she sits there being useless.

That's unfortunately just how his face looks. I also am inflicted with a mean looking resting face. He's probably just pointing in the direction of the voting booth or where they could build the new swing set together.

Actually there are Brits who think this. The logic is that 'well if we are voting for the future of our country and they are already retired and whatnot then surely it matters more to the youth who this vote will actually affect?' Gordon Ramsay actually said that in an AMA yesterday.

It's not necessarily flawed logic although it is kinda not ever going to happen that way ever ever.

It falls apart when the youth don't bother to vote though.

That too.

To be fair idk why voting isn't done in an easier manner (at least in the USA dunno about the UK I guess). CA is one of the only states that lets you do a mail in ballot without a real reason (others will only do that if you are disabled/military or something like that).

Make it more convenient to vote and I promise turn out will increase, especially in groups who aren't retired and devoid of anything to do in their free time.

That's 10$ for the spinefund.
Boris Johnson has written in his newspaper column about how brexit "Wasn't about immigration" and Thersea May the 2nd most likely PM launching her bid for leadership has stated that "There is a positive argument for immigration that hasn't been discussed" so it sounds like they are planning an EEA deal with freedom of movement from the eu but no representation of the UK in the european parliament. Basically the status quo now but without any voting power in the eu for the uk. They'd have until 2020 to figure out how to stop UKIP getting into power, I'd guess they are hoping rising national sentiment will get the EU to capitulate just a bit on freedom of movement, perhaps if Marine Le Pen wins the french election.

In a shocking twist it turns out that the elderly show up in massive amounts to vote because it's actually way more inconvenient than people think and old people have equally huge amounts of time and bad opinions.

There is some benefit to disentangling themselves politically from the EU. It makes it easier to :sever: if and when things break down, (and we are heading into a period of intense global crisis,) and it allows the EU to strengthen its own form of central governance without the Brits there to piss and moan.

Best for both parties, honestly.

They are here, although I don't know why since it's very very easy to fraudulently make other people in your house vote for things.

I live in one of the two three states with universal vote by mail and it owns, owns, owns, but while it offers a lot of procedural advantages and I'd favor its universal implementation, it isn't a panacea that makes young people all suddenly decide to actually vote

That's true but it's something at least.

Tell you right now if I had to actually go vote on that Tuesday or Wednesday or whatever during work hours for the primaries here a couple weeks ago it just wouldn't have happened. Mailed my vote in weeks in advance, though.

Oh no it's absolutely great, and anyone who doesn't vote really has no excuses

There's something to be said for the ritual of voting, but it's not a national holiday and even if it was there would be plenty of people still expected to work

I always look at those insane lines in important general elections and laugh/feel bad, because I usually voted days previously, with full access to the internet and other information sources if I'm unclear about any candidate, law, or initiative under consideration- which are significant advantages vote by mail would have even if election day was made a national holiday

even if you forget until the day of the election you can just drop it off at an official collection point in a public library or elsewhere (there's one in front of a local hardware store that usually has a line of cars dropping theirs off on election night)

it's super laid back and easy to fit into your schedule, and we do have among the highest voter participation rates in the nation

e: this is a pretty good summary: http://washingtonmonthly.com/2016/01/19/the-measure-and-mismeasurement-of-universal-vote-by-mail/

I did! I couldn't vote because I had to cover a woman's shift who couldn't get a childminder at the last minute because her husband ended up stuck in England due to voting. Kids were not at school due to voting. And my lunch is 30 mins and the walk alone to my nearest from work would take me 20 mins each way, let alone queues. But in general I agree. Even if the English don't listen to Northern Ireland and have the UK gerrymandered in such a way that England prevails.

So basically I failed our glorious british empire QQ.
