OK, I'm not going to get a hoist in my car like the swanky Mayor, but anyone ever use/see one of these in the flesh? Seems like a reasonable compromise. http://www.quickjacklift.ca/car-lift-systems/bl-5000slx-portable-car-lift.html

Holy poo poo a real life firehawk? I've never seen one in person (as far as I know, anyway) that's cool, dude must be good if people trust him with cars like that. Never seen one of those mini lifts used, looks like a decent idea but I'd be worried about the cross members blocking access to things you want to get at. Probably less of a problem on your new ride, what with everything being at the back and all I suppose. How tall is your garage ceiling? Four post lifts aren't much more money than that one, and they're great for winter storage.

Sooooooo I'm probably going to be buying an Avalanche within the next few months. I used to hate their ugly mugs but they're super practical for my situation and they're rapidly growing on me. Anything to be aware of? I'd be looking for one with the 5.3 that's under $7k for a tow/utility vehicle.

As a first time dry-sump owner, I was a little surprised when RTM I find out an oil and filter change is 8.3 litres in this little car.

I'm pretty sure flat 6s take a bit more oil than normal as well, the SVX took 6 liters so its probably a combination of the dry sump and being a flat 6. 8.3L is a biblical amount of oil though, do they do anything to help it get up to operating temperature sitting in the sump?

I found out about the massive sump in those engines the hard way helping a friend change his oil. My princess auto oil catch pan tried valiantly to hold the Exxon Valdez back but it was no use.

No heaters or anything like that. I just baby it for the first 5+ minutes of driving until I see the oil pressure not being quite so spiky. 8ender posted:I found out about the massive sump in those engines the hard way helping a friend change his oil. First order of maintenance is checking the filters and doing the transmission oil since the PO gave me his 3 bottles of Porsche-branded transmission fluid he bought last month and wasn't sure when it was last done.

Any idea how the hybrid system works? Is it just a secondary resevoir that injects oil in when the system pressure past the oil pump drops?

As I gather it, the oil sump is underneath the crankcase as is normal, but there are only small passages for oil from the crankcase to drain back into the sump. Additionally, oil is positively scavenged from both cylinder heads in the M96, from cam-driven suction pumps/air separators on the front of each cylinder head. Here's about the best picture I've found of an M96 motor with the sump plate off:

Any of you guys have a recommendation for a low profile trolley jack for the Porsche? I don't think I can (or more appropriately, should) realistically swing $1800 for that kick rear end quasi little lift, so I'm hoping I can score a jack for preferably $200 or less. I have an old trusty 2t which as served me pretty much my entire adult life and it's just a little to high to get under the 911.

It's two pieces and the halves are held together by a single bolt. You will have to loctite that bolt or else it will work itself loose every time you use the jack. It's low enough that it can fit underneath a 1" lowered RX8 so it should deal with the 911 well enough.

The jack actually holds up a car just fine, it's just that the handle used to snap back to the upright position when I stopped jacking (sometimes very violently) and now it just stays limp. I need like jack handle Viagra or something. Or maybe it's low on oil. It's probably not lifting very well anymore either, so maybe time to put new seals in it. Have to figure out how to take it apart... edit: It's the old red version of this one - http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/motomaster-aluminum-and-steel-low-profile-racing-jack-0090021p.html Seat Safety Switch fucked around with this message at 19:43 on Jul 5, 2016 |

Once you get into heavier stuff, pneumatic bottle jacks are the bee's knees. Edit: the step up to commercial vehicles and weight and milspec stuff means all your jacks and tire ramps and everything are useless and you have to start building jack platforms etc. On the plus side, with a 395/85r20 tires I can usually just work on stuff underneath while sitting in a camping chair. jonathan fucked around with this message at 18:57 on Jul 6, 2016 |
