Holy poo poo a real life firehawk? I've never seen one in person (as far as I know, anyway) that's cool, dude must be good if people trust him with cars like that.

Never seen one of those mini lifts used, looks like a decent idea but I'd be worried about the cross members blocking access to things you want to get at. Probably less of a problem on your new ride, what with everything being at the back and all I suppose.

How tall is your garage ceiling? Four post lifts aren't much more money than that one, and they're great for winter storage.

Sooooooo

I'm probably going to be buying an Avalanche within the next few months. I used to hate their ugly mugs but they're super practical for my situation and they're rapidly growing on me.

Anything to be aware of? I'd be looking for one with the 5.3 that's under $7k for a tow/utility vehicle.

It's a tall enough ceiling, but it's a double and not a big one at that. If I had posts in it I would lose a spot which would not go over well.

loving LOL

Avalanche is a great vehicle and I really liked mine. Really under-rated for utility. Being able to lock up the entire truck including the box and being able to hold 8'+ long items was pretty kick-rear end.

Verify which diff it has in it and also a true trailer package if that's what you're buying it for. When I got mine in 2004 (?) literally every one in GP had a 4.10. I wanted a 3.73 (or even taller) but none were available. I guess 4.10 is nice for towing a big trailer, otherwise not so much. Fuel economy was bad I think I was getting maybe 16 MPG on the highway. You should be able to get the option codes out of the glovebox and find out the diff ratios from that.

Or, just get the far rarer 2500 version with the 8.1 and gently caress fuel economy :getin:

$1800 though. 3000lb Electric forklifts only go for $300-$400. get 2 of them, one on each side. Then you can just drive them off to the side when they're not in use.

I'm pretty sure flat 6s take a bit more oil than normal as well, the SVX took 6 liters so its probably a combination of the dry sump and being a flat 6. 8.3L is a biblical amount of oil though, do they do anything to help it get up to operating temperature sitting in the sump?

the 2.5 in my legacy takes 5+ litres too, so yeah, the flat configuration probably impacts as well. No heaters or anything like that. I just baby it for the first 5+ minutes of driving until I see the oil pressure not being quite so spiky.

Yeah, I could see that being a little bit of a surprise. Pretty sure my enclosed pan takes about 10L so I should be OK. I know I've stored 2 "normal" oil changes worth of oil in it.

First order of maintenance is checking the filters and doing the transmission oil since the PO gave me his 3 bottles of Porsche-branded transmission fluid he bought last month and wasn't sure when it was last done.

I'm pretty sure that the M96 engine is wet-sump though, or at very most a hybrid wet-dry sump system. IIRC only the Mezger-engined 996s (GT3 and Turbo) are dry-sump.

Autopartsway can be competitive against RockAuto, especially if your warehouse game is poor. Alternatively if you're a dumb-dumb like me and drive a German car, germanparts.ca is often the best deal you can get.

I did a little research and it does seem to be a hybrid of sorts. Porsche calls it a drysump in all their literature and the "tank" seems to be integral with the block.

Probably so the provenance of the parts are harder to trace if someone tries to find out where it came from.

Any idea how the hybrid system works? Is it just a secondary resevoir that injects oil in when the system pressure past the oil pump drops?

As I gather it, the oil sump is underneath the crankcase as is normal, but there are only small passages for oil from the crankcase to drain back into the sump. Additionally, oil is positively scavenged from both cylinder heads in the M96, from cam-driven suction pumps/air separators on the front of each cylinder head.

Here's about the best picture I've found of an M96 motor with the sump plate off:

Any of you guys have a recommendation for a low profile trolley jack for the Porsche? I don't think I can (or more appropriately, should) realistically swing $1800 for that kick rear end quasi little lift, so I'm hoping I can score a jack for preferably $200 or less. I have an old trusty 2t which as served me pretty much my entire adult life and it's just a little to high to get under the 911.

I own this exact jack and it serves me incredibly well. My only complaint is the handle. It's two pieces and the halves are held together by a single bolt. You will have to loctite that bolt or else it will work itself loose every time you use the jack.

It's low enough that it can fit underneath a 1" lowered RX8 so it should deal with the 911 well enough.

Hmm, good to know. This one is not bolted, it has a spring-pin in the handle so hopefully it keeps tight but we'll see. For the price I'm not against drilling a small hole, bolt and loctite but hopefully it won't even need that.

Only thing I need now are 2 more stands and I should be good for the bulk of my needs. I'd still love that quick-lift, but I'll keep it as something to strive for :)

If you're not scared of messing with the hydraulics, you might be able to re-seal the cylinder on your existing jack for literally <$10

e: Also, Costco chat. They have some pretty darn good deals on tires.

Was able to order a set of front Potenza RE-71R to match my new rears for $205 each - compares well to the $178US they go for at Tirerack

The jack actually holds up a car just fine, it's just that the handle used to snap back to the upright position when I stopped jacking (sometimes very violently) and now it just stays limp.

I need like jack handle Viagra or something. Or maybe it's low on oil.

It's probably not lifting very well anymore either, so maybe time to put new seals in it. Have to figure out how to take it apart...

Once you get into heavier stuff, pneumatic bottle jacks are the bee's knees.

Edit: the step up to commercial vehicles and weight and milspec stuff means all your jacks and tire ramps and everything are useless and you have to start building jack platforms etc. On the plus side, with a 395/85r20 tires I can usually just work on stuff underneath while sitting in a camping chair.
