Yeah I don't particularly think that it's great, just... incredibly likely. Kids nowadays fuckin love iPads and tablets in general too though, so there's a bigger market than you might think for something that builds on top of that as a kids toy. Hell, the Family Cell Phone is barely a thing anymore, kids often have their own or play games on the old hand-me-down phone that doesn't have service.

However there would probably be an optional Nintendo-branded dedicated tablet of some sort that could be used if there is not a spare tablet or phone laying around. Probably some Android thing they hack together and lock down, but it's portable, and they could sell them for $99 or less. And almond-shaped :v:

This is a weird Nintendo apologist post.

1) Sony's store and steam are fine. They work. You can use them from anywhere. You don't have to be on the device you're going to play the thing on to even look.
2) How are midnight releases "making GBS threads on people in the midwest and east coast"? Because midnight PST isn't midnight MST/EST? Lol.

Sony's store is blech. The PS4's version is better than the PS3's due to the sheer virtue of it not crashing on a whim whenever but loading up videos that hang out in the background of certain games store pages and that dial a search search function is pretty annoying.

Steam's is good though.

But nobody looks back fondly on the Wii beyond a handful of first party Nintendo titles. It is mostly remembered as a popular but short lived gimmick that spent most of its life collecting dust next to a PS3 or Xbox 360. Those extra 20 million consoles didn't help them in the end because nobody bought the Wii U after seeing how badly they poo poo the bed with software support on the Wii.

In addition to finding it strange that a second standard was created to mollify the success of the Wii, I have had a problem with the "Little White Dust Collectors" meme. Namely, the only person irl who ever made the comment to me was someone who literally never owned a Wii. It just sounds like catchy bullshit to me.

I like the PSN web store so much I hadn't seen the ones on the actual consoles in forever, so when I went to check on something and ran into that weird background video thing it really threw me. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea

But Nintendo's web store is barely any more useful than the on device shop, and I like that one least of all. Especially with the constant launching in and out poo poo if you want to follow links from the Wii U menu features

I don't mind the WiiU's store because it lets me search for poo poo I want. I think that's my biggest gripe about Sony's. That being said Nintendo shat the bed pretty hard with the 3DS shop. That thing is not great to navigate.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/29/these-are-nintendos-lifetime-hardware-and-software-numbers

IGN claims that the Wii's attach rate was 8.84 games per system, with 9(!) titles selling over 10 million units. It's from two years ago so I'll discount the 3DS and WiiU numbers, so let's look at previous systems.

NES: 8.08
Game Boy: 4.22(!)
SNES: 7.72
N64: 6.83
GBA: 4.63
Gamecube 9.59
DS: 6.12

So...the Wii is in second place behind the Gamecube for Nintendo system software attach rates.

Their in-progress numbers for 3DS and WiiU as of two years ago are:

3DS: 3.56 (ouch...it'd already been on the market for three years at this point)
WiiU: 5.01 (this is before even Mario Kart 8 was out)

The numbers are a little surprising to me. I don't have strong opinions about the consoles since they sound like pretty reasonable numbers, although personally I didn't meet or exceed the figures for N64 (didn't have one) or Gamecube (got in on it way late) or Wii (straight up didn't use it enough to warrant it). What really shocks me are the handheld numbers, since the Game Boy had novelty going for it, the GBA had an absolutely incredible library, DS was solid, and 3DS is just all around terrific. I probably have almost as many GBA games as I do PS2 games, and I don't even want to think of how much I spent on that thing over the years.

I gotta say though, it's weird seeing numbers that low when I'm at like 650 titles on Steam and I know folks with way more than that.

They do, but they don't cater to gamers, they just throw gamers a bone sometimes. Nintendo of recent is actually a lot better about this than nintendo of yesteryear, which was frequently openly hostile to their biggest fans (rpg players are losers, clean the fridge, everything about competitive smash, the list goes on) but they will forever be chasing the dragon blue ocean of Non Gamers to buy their poo poo, and can I blame them? It doesn't help that a decade ago when Nintendo put out wildly popular software like Brain Age and Nintendogs their "loyal" fans rolled around screaming "Why are you abandoning us?" in a truly pathetic fashion. Even making something that was not aimed at them made them feel like they'd been stabbed in the back somehow.

Nintendogs turned out to be one of the most popular titles of last gen and is actually very highly rated (83 on Metacritic), yet people today go "get that poo poo out of here" whenever Nintendo even references it in Smash.

The Wii U itself is proof that Nintendo struggles to do this when it is basically the only serious support a console has. That's not an insult directed at Nintendo, it's just referencing their own admission that developing games on HD capable hardware was more demanding than they were initially prepared for. I'd love for them to be able to just throw out another F-Zero GX collab and a new Metroid and a new Zelda and a new DKC/Mario platformer and another Smash all in the same year. Realistically, I don't think any single company has the talent to juggle big projects like this all at once, make them all at the quality people expect out of Nintendo games, and then to have even more software for people to look forward to six months or less down the line.

Mandrel posted:

It's not that Nintendo never or hasn't produced good games for the Wii or Wii U. Some of the flat out best games of the generation are on the Wii U right now. I'm as critical about the company as any "hater" of the company could be accused of being, but they have made "AAA" games this generation that legitimately kick rear end.

Unfortunately for Nintendo, that's not good enough, and that's not really the problem the are having. One company producing ace software that its fans love isn't enough to sustain a console in the face of others that have more regular releases of new games, even if they aren't all close to as good as any single "gem" Nintendo could produce.

I think Nintendo can probably get by just fine making Nintendo games and not making games other companies are known for making, as long as they have the support from third parties. Hell, they DID have it at first for the Wii U, but the sales for the console basically drove off a cliff and Nintendo had no way to really convince anyone to stick around when there was newer hardware like the PS4 or Xbox One around the corner.

There's a pretty popular cat collecting app, basically you buy food and toys to lure new cats to your yard and get prizes from them. Use that as a basis and build on it. Follow the typical f2p structure of trickling out ingame currency while encouraging you to pay money for more.

I got one game for Christmas and one for my birthday, and basically scrimped and saved my $5/wk allowance to get more ($70) games as I could. My parents were weird about me getting new games. I rented a lot, and while I had amazing taste I think after years my SNES library was probably 20-something strong? Also the attach rates don't account for used games most likely, as I got a decent number of games from rental store sales and such.

Stuff like Wii Sports is like, people bought the system just for it. The Wii got so cheap that nabbing one and maybe a couple of controllers was an impulse purchase for some of the kinds of people who can afford $200 or less impulse purchases. There wasn't much else quite like it on the system that really appealed to the people who bought it for Wii Sports. It's a perfectly understandable thing to do for someone who isn't into games, but having Wii Sports or maybe even Wii Fit alone is worth the price of entry. Hell, have you SEEN how much personal trainers cost? One, maybe two sessions pays for that entire setup.
