I don't remember there being any major revelations about the main plotline (Taako's quest for tacos), so I'd say you're safe to skip it.

Are you kidding? It had two exposition dump episodes that went out of its way to explain the entire universe and canon that griffin is using. That's partially why it wasn't very good, it was griffin retconning an actual story into the adventure zone.

The episode with hodgepodge is probably the single best episode they've ever done, period, and there's great stuff with elevator museum/Upsey that's pretty goddamn brilliant, it just has a lot of pacing-ruining exposition, goes on too long and just like petals to the metal is a bunch of incohesive stuff that happens that doesn't feel complete so much as a bunch of disparate events happening all in a row.

It's not great but you'd be dumb to skip it, it's a pretty plot crucial arc.

Crystal Kingdom probably could've been a lot shorter if the boys didn't take literally every detour they possibly could. As it is, it's 3 or 4 solid stories that all got strung along as one. I had no problem with it, but I'll probably skip most of it if I ever decide to listen to it again.

It's unfortunate, because the reason why it's unskippable (long exposition segments building the whole world and setting us up for the endgame) is also the reason why you want it to be skippable. It rapidly goes off the rails, is at least 5 episodes too long, and eventually drops some of its main gimmicks. As Toxx said, though, you have to get to the second Hodgepodge episode at least, because that one's seriously an all-timer. Griffin rage quitting the episode after Justin asks if he said "Crystal Billy" is maybe my favorite Adventure Zone moment.

All of their nicknames come from their childhood days and I don't think they've ever gone into their origins, even though Scraps and Ditto are fairly easy to assume from context.

For what it's worth, I gave it a re-listen and enjoyed it better for hearing the whole thing without two weeks between episodes. There are definitely lots of detours, but every episode has some solid goofs between the plot dumps (which aren't that bad either).

The first arc as in "Here There be Gerblins"? Because that one's straight out of a D&D beginner's kit. Griffin didn't have much input beyond characters names and dialogue.

Crystal Kingdom starts strong and ends strong but boy is there a lot of fluff. The worst is when they shrink down just to fight some giant roaches. That's gotta be the most egregious "random battle" thing that's ever been on TAZ (though "Taako's good out here" almost made that worth it)
edit: Oh but the vocaloid crystal singing is really cool, almost forgot about that

My favorite bit is the last 1/3rd of Petals to the Metal because it's just a succession of wild battle scenarios and Griffin throwing wrench after wrench into the boys' plans. Rockport Limited is still probably the best overall arc though. I could listen to those three just rip on every random NPC Griffin introduces for days and days (and I have!!!)

It is amazing how quickly they decided to bully everyone on that train. Also I completely forgot that Taako mentioned his TV show in the conversation with Graham.

The boys work best with a consistent, stable group of NPCs, a confined location, and a clear objective. Which is why Rockport Ltd. was so good - murder-mystery on a train with a small supporting cast they're in constant contact with - and why Petals/Crystal Kingdom are so inconsistent/not good. In the former they're constantly bouncing around from location to location and only have Hurley until Justin literally invents Garyl, and even then she's gone for 2/3 of the story (the first third because she doesn't show up at the bank and the second because they're away from her doing the heist stuff), and they're in a whole bunch of different places at once. With Crystal Kingdom the trio's just sort of wandering the gently caress around for a billion episodes until the end happens - which I don't think is even that strong considering it just sorta comes out of nowhere, like, if I remember correctly it's someone passing a difficult throw that stops the final battle before it even starts. Denouement's pretty great though, but that's, again, when everyone's sort of gathered in one location and can just goof with and on each other.

To be diligent enough to design a good campaign and yet be breezy enough to be chill about people going off the rails without being a Type A about it, and also have improv skills. Think about that skillset existing in one nerd.

You don't have to design a campaign though, there are always books and stuff.
Hell you don't even have to be good at improv, just be willing to try it when poo poo hits the fan.

Its the type a stuff that people really have trouble getting past.

Merle did throw out a powerful spell that finished it off, but it wasn't before the battle even started. I just skimmed through it real quick and it was 38 minutes or so after the first attack. That feels like a pretty decent length, maybe even a little lengthy. I also thought it was pretty exciting what with the background robot thrashing and the ghost skeleton and stuff, but that's opinions.

EDIT: Man that's kind of a big chunk to forget about. You aught to give it another run through. Maybe you'll rediscover some gems.

I did like how they stepped on the coackroaches when they first appeared and then when they had to fight giant cockroaches later that counted as a previous victory for Magnus' memory shield.
