People sleep on powerful tools all the time. Popular competitive games have, and will continue to change overnight without any balance changes because one or two people demonstrated how powerful a tool everyone was ignoring really is. There's very few "solved" competitive games and they're all a decade+ old.

It appears to me the SG's is less influenced by movement compared to the AK. I have not seen hard statistics on this.

There's very few "solved" competitive games and they're all a decade+ old. Yeah, and I'm saying 3 years is ample time to do that in CS. There's only 3 Terrorist rifles. It's not some complex system where there can be lots of unknown combinations lying undiscovered or kept secret. Every player can pick it up and use it for themselves at any time. I'd also say that any overnight metagame shifts in any competitive game almost always follow a balance patch, and basically every competitive game ever has balance patches. It takes something like a week for people to identify most of the best decks in Hearthstone after new cards are released, and then maybe one or two more crop up in the following weeks, and then it remains roughly stable until the next expansion. I'd say most games approach close enough to solved in a month or two and a large enough playerbase. I'm struggling to think of examples where a game suddenly changed overnight due to an undiscovered powerful tool, and it had been viable in the game for at least one year already. And I can't think of any in games with playerbases as large as CS:GO.

For all the shitiness of climbing from causal to match making and then to prime its just better than what was there before.

Not a bad one, but jump scouting was known among pros and decent players for a long time. What really changed was the price tag for the Scout, it was reduced several times down from $2500 to $1700, which allowed you to buy it after losing pistol rounds, and that made it way more viable. In fact, one month after the price was reduced to $2000 and crouching and landing inaccuracy were reduced, it was used in competitive play. That allowed you to pull off the consecutive jump scouts like you see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOm1tNgdU_s http://wiki.teamliquid.net/counterstrike/2013-08-21_Patch It was also right after player acceleration was patched too, making the Scout way nicer to use. http://wiki.teamliquid.net/counterstrike/2013-09-26_Patch

M4A4 or M4A1-S? I've been partial to the A4 for a long while now. Debating if there's reason to switch.

As a ct do you tend to back up quickly when you get a kill or do you tend to keep shooting until no one's left or you die. I like the a1 because its slightly easier to get a pick if they can't identify quickly where you're shooting for and I'll happily back off in that event but any longer fight or stopping a hard rush can be rougher and I miss the extra ten bullets a lot then.

gently caress matchmaking. I've been working on climbing the ranks for a couple weeks now after having not played since long before the rank reset so I've slowly clawed my way up to silver elite master and the matchmaker is now actively loving me over. It's placing me with people who are so staggeringly bad that we can't hope to win. I just got out of a match where the whole team but one guy was trying to kick a player who never bought armor and wouldn't plant the bomb. When we asked green why he wouldn't vote kick he says that it's his 8 year old brother and he can't kick him or he will get upset. It rarely matches two even remotely equal teams, it's usually one team who is trash and one who is either ranked higher or has a smurf or two. Which team you get put on is luck of the draw.

Fighting games are totally out of my experience, though I know there were big shifts in Brood War. But I feel like these metagame changes are sort of different. It's more like a constantly evolving game of rock, paper, scissors to my mind, where people are just constantly anti-stratting, rather than sudden revelations about individual units which might be a more appropriate comparison. Like, for a while, Zerg will be beating Protoss consistently at a high level, then somebody works out a decent strategy that counters it, and then the matchup favours Protoss until the vice versa happens. While this is more of a question of "is dis gun good??" and I guess the proof is kinda in the pudding.
