Boy do I enjoy reading the same dull fluff pieces written by MLive and The Detroit Free Press/News promoting the latest lovely move by Ken Holland. I love being told every July that Holland's latest signing from the free agent garage sale will provide much needed scoring/grit.

Had fun early 4th of July party at my grandma's neighbor house, one of the son in laws is from Philly and it was funny that he guessed the first thing I would bring up since we last met at Christmas. I would like to say I was fair and told him that every series I expected the Pens to lose and he at least admitted that the Pens were a fun team to watch even if he was rooting against them the whole time against his wife's wishes. Don't know why though since he told me he hated the Rags and Caps wayyyyy more than the Pens. He also told me that the Pens should trade Malkin to save Cap space.

He's a bloviating, overly pessimistic troll, and I don't find him near as funny or amusing as he and his listeners do, but Valenti is smarter than most (seriously) and seemingly the only Detroit sports personality piling the deserved amount of poo poo in Holland's corner. Then again, piling poo poo on Detroit teams is pretty much all he does, though he is a nice alternative to the sunshine kitty cats and danishes perspective you get from everyone else. I really hope the Wings miss the playoffs and get Holland the gently caress out of there. There is a ton of pressure to maintain the streak, both within Detroit and from outside it (I think its the second longest playoff streak in all pro sports now?). He is trying to please everyone and its ultimately going to fail spectacularly at some point. And Im going to enjoy every last second of it.

This is a shift from where I felt when the Wings sucked at the end of last year but personally I think it'd be cool if they had the streak for as long as possible and break the record if they're gonna have to blow it up when they miss anyway. Because, and I guess this is a controversial opinion, but the playoffs are cool and playoff hockey is cool.

I was in a wedding this weekend and the groom's uncle is a huge Habs fan from Montreal. Talked to him about the Subban trade -- his summary was that Subban wasn't a great player because he turned the puck over a lot and lost the Habs a lot of games, and that the fact that he was universally loved by the fans was proof that he must be a gigantic rear end in a top hat 'behind the scenes' because why else would they trade him. It's the little things like that that make you appreciate SAS. Also FWIW I voted for Vancouver in the poll. Wouldn't be surprised if VAN has the worst season of the 3, but I think they started in a deeper hole and haven't really dug themselves TOO much further. I still think the Hall trade is perhaps the worst thing that's happened this offseason, despite all the ridiculous term thrown around on Free Agency Day. e: also, kind of interesting to see the value placed on grit/truculence/leadership this year. Not necessarily what you'd expect if you believe that cup winners create copycats, given the makeup and narrative around the Pens. I think the assumption around the league is near universal that the Penguins' success can't be duplicated because you have to start with Crosby and Malkin and so they just write it off as ultra luck Which there's some truth to that but I also think old codgers find it a convenient thing to hide behind so they can continue to ignore the importance of puck possession, defensemen that move the puck, and aggressive forechecking, which is what turned the Penguins from languishing around 8th-9th in the conference into a juggernaut overnight
