I have an Edgerouter X and I'm happy with it but I'm not sure I would recommend it to a random person in PYF without knowing if they know anything about computers.

yea but ryobi and hitachi are actually super lovely for real, they have a lot of failures and never last. Makita is alright for just farting around the house, good for the price. DeWalt and Milwaukee are only really good if you spend the money and buy the higher quality lines. The problem with most of them, including the entry-level DeWalt and Milwaukee products, is that they use plastic gears.

a comparison of a lovely dewalt(which is a bog standard drill) and the good ones

Eh, they both look lovely. I'm also not sure where you get that impression of Makita since their cordless tools are top notch, plus they've got the largest selection of cordless tools among the different manufacturers, not to mention they're much more consistent with their battery compatibility. Milwaukee is pretty much equivalent, though they're owned by a Chinese firm now so who knows how that will change, and Dewalt/Hitachi would be the next tier down, followed by Ryobi. Bosch makes great tools, but they unfortunately don't offer much cordless selection here in the states.

I've seen more makitas whipped across the site or beaten with hammers because they've stopped working than any other brand. Makita aren't garbage but they certainly aren't great.

Does anyone have any recommendations on routers/routers+modems? My budget is preferably under $200 with some flex for a modem combo/bundle (maybe $240?). I bought their top pick a year and a half ago and have no routing problems, also my cable guy came over last month for modem problems and said that sure is a good router, also I don't know anything about routers and modems but I set it up and figured out how to log into it and can change the settings if someone tells me to so maybe you will like this one if you don't like the fancy schmancy thing the other guy suggested.

Tragically the top pick has a documented issue with Comcast/Xfinity, and I'm trying to fix the frustrating thing at this point, but thank you very much for the suggestion!

I'm casually proficient in getting home networks set up? Like basic troubleshooting, getting things connected, getting printers connected (and yelling at them), and all that. The most hardcore stuff I would do is either running a PowerLine or if I purchase a place running some Cat5e through the walls and making sure it all works right.

Etrips posted:

You would probably be better to ask in the networking thread.

Good call! I took a peek through the last few pages and the OP - it looks like some recent firmware nonsense have diddled up how some of the recommended routers and APs are handling printers, and I hate the poo poo out of that particular technology already.

Those look like they will be the choices - I do have a particular soft spot for Motorola, but replacing a modem isn't something I really want to do. The cable/internet service is fixed for my apartment through my lease so I don't get anything out of returning the crappy stock equipment. One day, though, I will have my internet paradise.

PoE is probably not something I *need*, but it does look fun...

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Extremely cost efficient, good reliability, and does pretty much everything you'll need to do for a basic home network. Ubiquiti makes good pro-sumer grade stuff that you can stick in your house without paying $$$ for either bullshit XTREME GAMING branded items or $$$$ for actual high end networking gear.

E: or go buy a second hand ASA / SRX off ebay or whatever if you actually know what you're doing and want an enterprise firewall to protect your porn. *shrug*

C-SPAM Times best-selling author
Since the crash of the British Pound I finally got around to purchasing some things from The Folio Society. They're slightly more affordable now.

They finally arrived today, and they are a loving pearl on my bookcase. Full color illustrations, fold out facimiles, colorful linings, each has an individual case. Beautiful. The Folio Society releases the prettiest of all books, but the books they provide are pretty amazing works of literature in their own right. They also included a really bad-rear end notebook for free with my order (I probably won't use it because it's too nice):

These are going to be really helpful to me for my research into the Second Anglo-Dutch War, and I hope I can draw some interesting conclusions based upon what I read in them. Both the fire and the plague took place during that war and were allegedly started by Dutchmen, and hopefully by the time I finish reading them I can get to the bottom of these claims (and flesh out my PhD).

I have had about 50 books from the Folio Society on my "to-buy" list for years, and since they only sell them from their own site by means of the GBP, this seems like the perfect time to finally order some, and also I feel like I am helping those poor British bastards in some small way as well.

I highly recommend The Folio Society for lovers of book porn. They have all the classics, but in wonderful harcover pimped-out luxurious editions that are designed to be drooled over.

They also make great gifts for book-loving friends. You like Tolstoy? Here's a hard-cover War and Peace decked out in gold leaf; I love you too.

This post reads like an advertisement, but I'm just happy to finally have a nice thing I have been lusting after for years and which finally became a good deal more affordable overnight.

this is a good purchase. sadly, the 600 and 500 are not--the inability to recess the feed makes it unpocketable and in danger when dropped, if you haven't tried them before/are considering grabbing a different hardness.
