it's silly to consider the 480 launch a failure if the card is selling as well as it seemingly is. we keep forgetting that the target market for the reference 480 isn't itt. i doubt half the people who bought it even heard about the PCI-E issues.

Then I'd say we don't know enough about the 480 supply (and definitely not nearly enough about the margins) to really say that.

I didn't read the OC thread but that card has an 8 pin connector so perhaps that's what they were talking about when they said that power draw wasn't an issue.

That would depend on if the Sapphire version shows the same linked behavior between the PCIe slot and cable power, if it's still doing that and the slot power has not been greatly lowered I could see the problem persisting.

To walk this back a bit, I think you're right in saying it's maybe too early to call it a "failure". It's definitely not enough information to consider it a "success" either, which was more my point. But even if it doesn't hit its target well, the 480 sales might be gravy compared to whatever they pull in for the 460-470. Again, you have to look at the entire family of chips when you have to take floorsweeping into account.

Lol this didn't occur to me. Looking at the graphs the power draw from the board and 6 pin are definitely tied together (unlike any other card made by either side)... If that is due to some hardware limitation then no amount of power plugs would make a difference...

I've decided I'm going to create a GPU company, and while our performance may be middling our company will be built on a guarantee: there will be stock for you to buy one.

We will achieve this guarantee by implementing a technology to determine whether the card is being used to make BitCoins and setting the host PC on fire if it is.

No, the OC guy was talking about 480s in general, saying loads of cards go past pcie spec.

E: "Power draw is not an issue on regular RX 480, it is something all current cards do which is exceed power draw, even a 960 does, but for some reason people are making a lot of noise on the RX 480 about it, whereas this is nothing new and effects plenty of other GPU's.

It won't harm your mainboard and AMD are even releasing a new driver on 5th July next week to resolve such issue any way."

This is just plain wrong lol. I get the idea it probably isnt bad, frankly at first I figured it'd be not much of anything at all, but no it is not normal and other cards do not behave in quite this way.

I'm going to guess you dont want to watch a 35 minute video but it addresses all these things

Remember, before benchmarks came out, that we said AMD must be taking a loss on every RX480 sold?

It would seem the $200 pricing is entirely consistent with its performance.

Used 970's are selling for ~$200-220 on ebay. I think the 480 is priced pretty reasonably if you consider it a new 970.

I don't think so - if NVIDIA released a card at the same performance level as the 480, it'd probably be near $300.

The 480 is extremely fairly priced. If they can come up with a convincing fix for the power through the PCIe slot issue, there's no problem with recommending it at the price it launched at.

480s also have a warranty which is awesome for poor who can't afford to replace cards every 6 months.

Well, most people don't even know about potential PSU issues, until their poor choices cause their PC to burn down.
