Nobody wanted a long campaign, it was just the only option for a DD that didn't completely gently caress up the timing of future elections. Note that the campaign could have been even longer (July 9), but they avoided it.

The current situation has nothing to do with the Greens or the Libs. The ALP ran a good campaign, the Greens talked about the ALP all campaign if anything damaging their vote rather than improving it.

The Libs wanted the legislation so they could call a DD for a long campaign. They thought they could out campaign the ALP, it turns out, they couldn't. Just because now their decision was a bad one, doesn't mean the Greens can wash their hands of giving the Libs exactly what they wanted.

They passed legislation then afterwards realised they made glaring mistakes after it was pointed out by the ALP.

So, what you're saying is, the greens screwed it up, but it didn't have any actual impact? Okay.

I think it took 2 weeks to finish Reps counting in 2010 because that's how long they have to wait for postal votes etc to come in. It's not the limiting factor at the moment yet though.

We may know for sure who gets 6 year Senate terms until the Senate sits.

The longer this drags out, the better I might think. Though I stand to be corrected.

The need for old liberals to take to the press to tell them to stop sharpening the knives says it all really. That said, both sides will be insufferable saying things their votes can't back up until the AEC starts declaring seats.

I'm legit curious about how countries can function like that. Don't we need working government to set budgets, interact with foreign powers and generally keep things ticking over? If a caretaker government were to find a way to delay vote-counting indefinitely, that would be a great backdoor into a dictatorship.

Maybe if Australia were to dissolve into anarchy it might prompt the Governor-General to get off his arse ;)
