Sounds about right. I can name about one plant in the entire Anza-Borrego desert that does not have spikes. Also, gently caress this cactus This is called beavertail cactus. While it might not look like it's thorny, all those little pores on there are actually little spike pits filled with extremely tiny fillament spikes. If your hand gets too close to this fucker, your skin will get impaled with a million tiny little filaments. Imagine that feel from getting a tiny wood splinter stuck in your hand, then multiply that poo poo by about 10,000. That's the feeling from touching a beavertail cactus. They also love to grow in nice, shady nooks too, so image you're climbing up a rock side and you stick your hand into a nook you can't quite see. Oh wait, it's stuffed with a loving beavertail. gently caress my life for about two weeks while the needles worked their way out of my skin. Here's one showing the little spikes better:
