In reality the rope wouldn't remain taut on the other side of the cut. However Cartoons don't have to represent single moment frozen in time and it is perfectly legitimate to show the rope before and after the cut in the same image.

The Mexican stand-off guy looks like Tony Blair from behind --On first impression I was baffled why David Blunkett was running for Tory leadership I still hate BoB but I really like that Crab(b) car. I am impressed these cartoonists set the leadership contest in totally different pop cultural settings. No American cartoonist would have bothered, even though 2/3 are US exports.
