Finally manned up and bought an electric (American Standard HSS Strat) to accompany my acoustic (Martin DXK2AE). I'm a piano guy but am having so much fun trying to layer tracks and create soundscapes with these two guitars! Wonder if anyone has any good guides for editing audio in Audacity? I'm using one stereo mic for these and would like more control over the sound. Thanks for your time! https://soundcloud.com/incredulousdylan/a-pirate-looks-at-forty Sie posted:Link - Soundcloud I like the production values on these a lot! Thanks for asking! My main concern is being able to EQ and then add some depth to a vocal track so that it sits better among the other stuff going on. I'm not a singer, so I figure that will lessen the blow of bad singing, hah. For example, the vocals on this tune sound pretty flat against everything else going on. I tried adding some really light reverb with the built-in plugin but didn't know what I was doing. Most attempts resulted in some wierd-rear end sounding vocals. Also, I have no idea how to use compression or really anything else. All I've ever done is record and then adjust volume on some tracks so that they don't step on other things, or do a fade out. I just know there has to be a guide out there for basic poo poo in Audacity that you should know when mastering audio to get a recording sounding better.

Yeah I uh... ditched the last thing because silliness happened. Its also painfully clear I have no idea what I'm doing with soloing.

Incredulous Dylan posted:I like the production values on these a lot! I'm not super into game music but some of the orchestral stuff was really good. Thanks! I spend a good chunk of time trying to get my stuff sound as authentic as possible next to actual movie scores. I just finished up another original orchestral piece if anyone wants a listen. This one is about space - https://soundcloud.com/simon-spark/adrift-the-relief-of-rescue I've had a listen to the vocal track you posted earlier. The recording itself ain't too bad at all (if a little roomy), just needs a little production love. It's tricky to give specifics (and vocals can be really hard to get right) but for something like that, I'd maybe consider some VERY subtle double tracking to thicken it up a bit. Also, If you've got a compressor that has a bunch of vocal presets, start there. They'll probably need taming down a bit. Set a ratio of about 3.5 and then adjust the threshold, attack and release so that the vocal sounds more present but doesn't sound overly squashed (you can usually tell when it is because all your breathing becomes pretty loud). General EQing tips would be adding body and warmth by boosting small amounts around 200-300Hz, for more presence you wanna be in the 2000Hz area but again, its very easy to overdo. Reverb - again, start with a vocal preset and fiddle about to add some width. The best advice I think I can give though is to just try things - constantly A/Bing against a reference track you like the sound of - and letting your ears be the judge because no guide is ever really going to train your ears on how to immediately recognise the areas to work on in your own recordings. I know that never really sounds very helpful to a frustrated musician but it honestly is the best approach to these things in my experience. Anyway, just gave you a follow on Soundcloud to hear how your sound develops. Good luck with it. Sie fucked around with this message at 17:18 on Apr 5, 2016 |

Thanks for the detailed advice. It really helps to have some sort of starting point. I'm a very amateur musician and have always just hit record and hoped it sounded alright, haha. I'm excited to have guitar to learn and the basics of production.

I post here too much - this will be the last one for a while. My first full length album is up for pre-order on bandcamp. It's a 20 track cyberpunk concept album. More info on the page. It will come with a PDF containing a companion story and illustrations to go with the music (which sorta functions like a soundtrack.) 4 tracks are available now with all 20 upon release on June 7th. complete noob rear end guy here to SA, looking for general feedback (how you felt, any improvements you would make?, what parts did you like/dislike?) I make music with vocals and piano, I don't know what genre that's in, seems to be Singer/Songwriter Currently I only have a bunch of demo quality tracks so don't expect high quality mixing and mastering Here is my soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/noval-14/tracks Try to avoid the song "Beginnings" at the moment if you're very nitpicky because I need to fix a bunch of parts of it I'm barely a person.

https://soundcloud.com/incredulousdylan/my-cherie-amour This is what I'd say is my first full recording - I recorded multiple tracks off of my synthesizer and did some EQing and volume control for each one. I'm gonna work on it over time as I learn more about mastering! Thanks for the editing advice earlier in the thread. I'm thinking more about how to handle each separate part of a song and didn't get around to that until I got some good advice. I had fun trying to find a sound that fit a Stevie Wonder song - I ended up combining a weird organ and guitar/harpsichord voice. My debut cyberpunk concept album "Cadence" is available now here: https://neonshudder.bandcamp.com/album/cadence It's 20 tracks + a 120+ page PDF with illustrations featuring an original cyberpunk story. Here's the synopsis: "In 2254 a series of gruesome high profile murders on the island of Cadence are being kept under wraps by Cadence Technologies. The 'Go! Group' - a small collective of specialists taking odd jobs from courier services to asset recovery - have been hired to investigate. Some believe that Daniel Skinner, the son of a dead executive is behind the murders. The Go! Group and Cadence Tech will find out that the truth far worse than any of them could have ever imagined. Cadence will answer for its sins. " You can read the first 5 chapters for free here: http://neonshudder.com/Cadence_Sample.pdf
